Eastern Niagara Hospital was the name created to cover a pair of hospitals founded in the early 1900s in Lockport and Newfane, New York that each operated independently. Under cost pressures they were both operated under the Eastern Niagara Health System (ENHS) umbrella. ENHS also operates a nursing home. [3] [4] [5] [6] In 2019 The New York Times portrayed Eastern as among the least likely to overcharge, yet they were facing cost pressures. [3] [7]

Lockport Memorial Hospital

The Lockport City Hospital opened on July 1, 1908, as an 18-bed medical facility. It was renamed Lockport Memorial Hospital in 1959. In 1999, the Lockport Memorial Hospital and the Newfane Inter-Community Memorial Hospital took on a legal affiliation under the name Eastern Niagara Hospital. By 2009 the new names Eastern Niagara Health System and Eastern Niagara Hospital were being used. Lockport was known as Eastern Niagara Hospital/Lockport Division; the other location was known as the Newfane Division. [8] [9] [10] [11]

In 1999, it was described by The New York Times as "struggling," [12]

On June 17, 2023, Eastern Niagara Hospital closed their Lockport hospital. [13] As a result of a collaboration with Catholic Health, a temporary emergency room was opened in the Town of Lockport on June 18, 2023. [14] This temporary emergency room would serve the Lockport community until the new Lockport Memorial Hospital would open in Fall 2023.

Newfane Division

The Eastern Niagara Hospital/Newfane Division was previously known as Inter-Community Memorial Hospital. In 2019 this facility was closed as part of filing for bankruptcy protection, although another hospital indicated at the time that they'd take it over. [15] [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] [23]

New Lockport Memorial Hospital: A Campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital

Catholic Health broke ground for a new hospital in 2021 in collaboration with Eastern Hospital System. [24] The new hospital named Lockport Memorial Hospital opened in the Town of Lockport on October 10, 2023. [25] It is a Campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital. [26]

Services

The new Lockport Memorial Hospital provides the following services: X-Ray, CT Scan, Ultrasound, Mammography, Bone Densitometry, Laboratory, Primary Care, Cardiology, OB/GYN, General Surgery, Ear/Note/Throat, Orthopedics, Neurology, Endocrinology, Emergency Services [27]

Also, the new hospital has a helipad which allows for transport to other medical facilities. The separate Express Care facility closed upon opening of the new hospital. [28]

Plans are currently underway to create an emergency vehicle access road from Route 93 (Lockport Bypass) to expedite hospital access for ambulances and other emergency vehicles. [29]

Niagara County Community College (NCCC) is a public community college in Sanborn, New York. Founded in 1962, NCCC is sponsored by Niagara County and offers associate degrees as part of the State University of New York system. Dual admissions programs facilitate transfer to four-year colleges upon completion of the two-year degree programs. NCCC operates the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute as a remote campus within the former Rainbow Centre Factory Outlet in downtown Niagara Falls, New York.

The Somerset Railroad was a railroad that operated in Niagara County, New York. It was operated by CSX Transportation. The railroad was built with the primary objective of providing coal to the Kintigh Generating Station, also known as the Somerset Power Plant, a 675 megawatt coal-fired power plant located in Somerset, New York. The railroad was built in 1983 by the New York State Electric and Gas Co. using new and old rights of way. From Lockport, New York, it runs on the defunct International Railway Co. (IRC) interurban line opened in 1900 under the name Buffalo, Lockport & Olcott Beach (BL&OB) which became part of the IRC in 1902. From Newfane, New York, the SOM sweeps off the IRC to the Hojack Line in Appleton, New York, to West Somerset in the Town of Somerset. It then swings off on new trackage to a series of spurs and a loop at the Kintigh Generating Station.

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) is the public agency responsible for operating most public transportation services in the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The NFTA, as an authority, oversees a number of subsidiaries, including the NFTA Metro bus and rail system, the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport, the Niagara Falls International Airport and NFTA Small Boat Harbor. The NFTA Metro bus and rail system is a multi-modal agency, utilizing various vehicle modes, using the brand names: NFTA Metro Bus, NFTA Metro Rail, NFTA Metrolink and NFTA PAL. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 15,429,900, or about 54,600 per weekday as of the second quarter of 2024.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Interstate 990</span> Highway in New York

Interstate 990 (I-990) is an auxiliary Interstate Highway located entirely within the town of Amherst in Erie County, New York, in the United States. It runs in a roughly north–south direction for 6.35 miles (10.22 km) through the southwestern and central parts of Amherst from an interchange with I-290 north of Buffalo to an intersection with New York Route 263 south of Lockport. The highway serves as a connection between Buffalo, the University at Buffalo, and Lockport. Like I-590 in nearby Rochester, I-990 does not physically meet I-90, its parent Interstate Highway; instead, the highway makes the connection by way of a "sibling" highway (I-290). I-990 is the highest numbered Interstate Highway in the US.

New York State Route 78 (NY 78) is a 73.49-mile-long (118.27 km) state highway in western New York in the United States. While it is signed north–south, the southern portion runs in an east–west direction across Wyoming and Erie counties, from its beginning at a junction with NY 19 north of the village of Gainesville to the village of East Aurora. The part of the route north of East Aurora follows a generally north–south alignment to an intersection with NY 18 in the Niagara County town of Newfane, just south of the Lake Ontario shoreline. The route is most closely identified in the region with Transit Road, a major north–south trunk road through the center of Erie and Niagara counties; however, NY 78 does not follow Transit Road for its entire length, nor does Transit Road comprise more than half its length. The highway joins Transit Road north of East Aurora and stays with the road until nearly its end in the city of Lockport.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">International Railway (New York–Ontario)</span> Former urban transit company in Buffalo, NY

The International Railway Company (IRC) was a transportation company formed in a 1902 merger between several Buffalo-area interurban and street railways. The city railways that merged were the West Side Street Railway, the Crosstown Street Railway and the Buffalo Traction Company. The suburban railroads that merged included the Buffalo & Niagara Electric Street Railway, and its subsidiary the Buffalo, Lockport & Olcott Beach Railway; the Buffalo, Depew & Lancaster Railway; and the Niagara Falls Park & River Railway. Later the IRC acquired the Niagara Gorge Railroad (NGRR) as a subsidiary, which was sold in 1924 to the Niagara Falls Power Company. The NGRR also leased the Lewiston & Youngstown Frontier Railroad.

WLVL is a radio station broadcasting a News Talk Information format. Licensed to Lockport, New York, United States, the station serves the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area. The station is currently owned by Bill Yuhnke, who also owns WEBR in Niagara Falls.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Van Horn Mansion</span> Historic house in New York, United States

The Van Horn Mansion was built by Judge James Van Horn in 1823. It is the site of the Town of Newfane's first town meeting, April 6, 1824. The name for the Town of Newfane is believed to be chosen by the town Postmaster. The Mansion includes 16 rooms and five bathrooms. It is located on Lockport-Olcott Road in Niagara County, New York on Route 78 and is also considered to be haunted. It is one many National Register of Historic Places in Niagara County.

Activities include Celtic music, genealogy, food and drink, dance, cultural exhibits, games, sports, arts and crafts, and children's activities. The main performances play at four stages located throughout the grounds, including The Fireside, The Dragonfly and the Celtic Arts Theatre. The society also hosts a Celtic College, with various lectures and classes during the event.
