The Eastman bus crash occurred on August 4, 1978 when forty people were killed after the chartered bus they were travelling in suffered brake failure, causing the bus to careen down a steep hill, plunging into Lac d'Argent, just east of Montreal, Quebec, near the town of Eastman. [1] The driver plus 6 volunteers, who were assisting the group on a visit to a theatre performance in another town, escaped from the bus before it sank. [2] The Eastman Bus Crash is the second deadliest road traffic accident in Canadian history after Les Eboulement Bus Accident in 1997 that killed 44 people. [3]

Accident

On the evening of August 4, 1978, members and volunteers of the Fraternité des malades et des personnes handicapées d'Asbestos, left the town of Asbestos, QC, on a chartered bus to attend a theatrical performance at the Théâtre de la Marjolaine, in the town of Eastman. QC. [1] Just before midnight, as the bus was leaving the theatre, the driver lost control of the bus due to brake failure as the bus was descending a steep hill towards Lac d'Argent. [4] The driver was faced with two choices, negotiate the 90 degree turn onto the highway at the bottom of the hill and risk flipping the bus or head for the lake and hope for a softer landing in the water. [4] He chose to head to the lake. [4] Passing over the highway and on to the beach the bus would hit the water at approximately 64km/hr, skimming across the lake and coming to a floating rest 80 metres from shore, in 20 metres of water. [4] The bus would float for approximately 15 minutes before sinking. [4] Six volunteers and the driver managed to escaped. [2] None of the disabled survived. [1] It would take 28 hours for rescue crews and divers to locate the bus and pull it to shore where the bodies were evacuated on shore. [4] One body was recovered from shore. [4]

Investigation

In the days after the crash, an investigation would ensue that highlighted some of the key issues that lead to the crash. Investigators would learn that only one set of brakes out of four had been operational at the time of the crash. [4] Survivors also noted that the driver had stopped several times on the way to the theatre to troubleshoot a sticky accelerator peddle. [4] It was also revealed that owner/mechanic of the charter company had removed the hand parking brake that evening as parts to repair it had been difficult to find. [4] The driver was not charged or found to be negligent in the crash. [4]

Aftermath

The tragedy would go on to raise awareness around bus safety across the province. On August 17, 1978 the province of Quebec announced regulations that would require all buses to under go routine maintenance every 3 months. [4] Of the 143 buses tested that September, only 37 passed inspection. [4] A memorial plaque was erected close the accident seen by Lac d'Argent. [5]

The Måbødalen bus accident or Måbø Canyon bus accident was a bus crash on 15 August 1988 during the descent from Hardangervidda into the Måbø Valley on the way to Bergen, Norway. The bus collided with the concrete arch at the exit of the Måbø Tunnel on Norwegian National Road 7. Of the 34 passengers aboard, 15 were killed. In addition, the bus driver died from his injuries 12 days after the crash.

The Yuba City bus disaster occurred on May 21, 1976, in Martinez, California. A chartered school bus transporting 52 passengers on an elevated offramp left the roadway, landing on its roof. Of the 52 passengers, 28 students and an adult adviser were killed in the crash.

The Lac-Mégantic rail disaster occurred in the town of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, Canada, on July 6, 2013, at approximately 1:14 a.m. EDT, when an unattended 73-car Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway (MMA) freight train carrying Bakken Formation crude oil rolled down a 1.2% grade from Nantes and derailed downtown, resulting in the explosion and fire of multiple tank cars. Forty-seven people were killed. More than thirty buildings in Lac-Mégantic's town centre were destroyed, and all but three of the thirty-nine remaining buildings had to be demolished due to petroleum contamination. The Beaune coach crash occurred on 31 July 1982 on the French A6 motorway near Beaune, in the Côte-d’Or département of east-central France. It is the second deadliest road traffic collision in France's history after the 2016 Nice truck attack. 53 people died, including 46 children. Most of the victims were on board a coach that caught fire as a result of the collision. The coach passengers were from Crépy-en-Valois in the Oise département of Picardy, northern France.

On April 6, 2018, sixteen people were killed and thirteen were injured when a northbound coach bus struck a westbound semi-trailer truck near Armley, Saskatchewan, Canada. The driver of the semi-truck had failed to yield at a flashing stop sign at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335. The semi-trailer was travelling at a speed of approximately 100 km/h (62 mph). Most of the deceased and injured were players from the Humboldt Broncos, a junior ice hockey team from Humboldt, Saskatchewan, which plays in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).
