Ebenator (popularly known as Ebenator Ozulogu) is a town in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, south-eastern Nigeria, predominantly occupied by Igbo speaking people. Ebenator has good weather and fertile lands, as it is surrounded by natural water. The Igbo people living around there live in families close to each other and are predominantly Christians.[ citation needed ]

Name

The town is called 'Ebenator Ozulogu' because of her great deeds in the past. According to oral history, the town, not withstanding her smallness, was very mighty, and fought with virtually all her neighbouring communities who attempted to annex, plunder, raid, incur, pillage or even annihilate her because of her smallness in those olden days. The town was indomitable and able to wage war with all those neighbouring communities, and emerge victorious because of the powerful god —Akwai, and goddess — Ofala which the people worshipped then.

Villages

Ebenator is made up of three villages, Umunnama, Umuonyeukpa and Ubaha. [1] [2]

History

The name Ebenator was coined in 1918 by an Anglican church teacher posted to the community, Peter Onwuemerie. Then, these three autonomous villages hitherto had no one general name, by which they were addressed as a community, until Onwuemerie suggested Ebonator (meaning three villages/regions), a name which the community leaders and members swiftly subscribed to, and which later became pronounced as Ebenator, the name the community bears till today. Geography

Ebenator shares boundary with other communities in Nnewi South Local Government, such as Ukpor, Ezinifite, Osumenyi, Utuh. Ebenator produced the first trained teacher, the first university graduate, the first medical doctor, and first professor in the entire Mbanese, which is a general name for a conglomerate of five (out of ten) communities that make up the local government. These communities are Ebenator, Ezinifite, Akwaihedi, Osumenyi and Utuh. [4]

Government

The town's apex body is the Ebenator Development Union (E.D.U.), with Chief Anthony Okechukwu as the current President General. The Traditional Ruler of the community, H.R.H. Igwe Chinewubeze Ezejiburu is the longest-serving monarch in the entire Nnewi South.

Environmental challenges

One of the greatest challenges confronting Ebenator Community is gully erosion. The community has a gully erosion site popularly known as Ibo Ebenator which is one of the deepest gully erosion sites in the entire south-eastern Nigeria.

The dangerous gully erosion, which is over 120 ft (37 m) deep from the normal topographical terrain, and which has a length span of about 2.6 mi (4.2 km), has been one of the greatest environmental challenges confronting Ebenator community since the last two decades.

The gully roots from a neighbouring community, Osumenyi and stretches down to the Ofala River in Ebenator. It has claimed lives of many citizens, pulled and caved down many houses, destroyed crops and farmlands and damaged properties worth millions of Naira. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

Aguata is a Local Government Area in Anambra State in Nigeria, with its headquarters in Aguata, a major part of which falls into Aguluezechukwu, while the smallest part falls within the commercial town of Ekwulobia. There has been an age-long contention on this issue between the locals of Aguluezechukwu and Ekwulobia, with both towns claiming the status of the headquarters on account of ownership claim to the 'Aguata land'. The community also celebrates cultural activities like the New Yam festival. Ihembosi has many schools and colleges with a community library that serves the whole community. The community also has participated in as well as benefitted from different literacy and development activities.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ofala Festival</span>

The Ofala Festival is an annual ceremony practiced by Igbo people, particularly the indigenes of Onitsha, Umueri, Umuoji and other neighboring communities such as Aguleri, Nnewi and Ukpo in Dunukofia Local Government Area. It serves as a rites of renewal of the king or Igwe or Obi and it is similar to the Igue festival in Benin and the Ine, Osi or Ogbanigbe Festival in many mid-West Igbo communities of Nigeria. The term ofala, is derived from two Igbo words - ọfọ and ala. The festival is celebrated within two days mostly in October by the Obi and is a customary obligation that must be performed every couple of years without fail.

Anambra State Library Board (ANSLB), is a Nigerian-established Library Board that manages all the public libraries in Anambra State. It is situated along Awka – Enugu express road by Aroma junction in Awka, the capital of Anambra State. Its headquarter is located at Professor Kenneth Dike State Central e-Library, Awka. It has eleven public libraries, comprising three Divisional libraries with seven Branch/Community libraries and the headquarter that houses the Library Board – Professor Kenneth Dike State Central e-Library, Awka. The State Library Board has won awards for the Best Public Library in Nigeria for three consecutive years, earning it another award for the Ever Green Public Library in Nigeria

Ihembosi Community Library, is a Nigerian community branch library under the Anambra State Library Board. The public library is located in the Ihembosi community in the Ekwusigo local government area of Anambra State, under Anambra South Senatorial District. It is one of the eleven public libraries in Anambra State built to offer literacy and information services to the residents of the host community and its environs. Ihembosi community library is under the Nnewi Divisional Library which reports directly to the Director of the Anambra State Library Board in Awka.
