Ukpor is a town in Anambra State, and the headquarters of Nnewi South, One of the seven local governments of Anambra South senatorial district. Consists of six political wards with a total of 81 polling units. [1]

Ukpor has a collection of villages, each coming from different quarters. [2] Ukpor is noted for its hilly topography, with one of the most notable of the hills that traditionally known as "ugwu ekwensu", which means "the devil's own hill", and presently known as Ugwuonyezuberem. In modern times, however, continuous grading of the road that crosses this hill has been reducing its height of this historic high land. [3]

Ukpor people were predominantly farmers in the past. Subsequently, the area's prominent residents became mainly traders and sundry types of business men and women.

The town's apex body, Ukpor Improvement Union (U.I.U) remains the super-structural political, social and cultural organization in the community.

The current President General of U.I.U is Hon. Ikenna Mbazulike-Amechi from Amihe, Ukpor.

Nnewi South is now known as Mbaneri by its students in higher institutions. Mbaneri means the ten towns in Nnewi South, which are Akwaihedi, Amichi, Azigbo, Ebenator, Ekwulumili, Ezinifite, Osumenyi, Ukpor, Unubi and Utuh.

Culture

Asara

Asara is the greatest cultural festival celebrated by Ukpor community at a periodic intervals of ten, fifteen or even twenty years. Historically, the origin of the cultural festival can be traced Ọgụ Agbaja (War of Agbaja) which was an intercommunal war between the people of Ukpor in the present-day Nnewi South Local Government and the people of Nnewi in the present-day Nnewi North Local Government, and in which the Ukpor people emerged victorious, after killing Metuh, the then greatest and most dreaded warrior of Nnewi [4]

The war was caused by unwarranted and undeserved maltreatment from the then King of Nnewi who would always compel the young men and women of the neighbouring communities to take particular days that they would go and work for him, and which they were to go with their foods and water, as there were no provisions for any refreshment made by the king, who never rewarded, entertained nor appreciated the labourers in any way.

Hence, the then newly emerged Ukpor king determined never to tolerate but to put a perpetual end to such an inhumane act; and consequently issued an order condemning and prohibiting that. This infuriated the king of Nnewi, that he pronounced a war against those neighbouring communities for their act which he term 'rebellious'; and they began the war with their nearest community which is the present-day Ukpor, which preparedly had already united and strategized with the nine villages that made up the Ekweteghete, being the general name of the nine villages that were subjected to the unrewarded compulsory labour.

It was in celebration of this victory which Ukpor recorded in the War of Agbaja that the then king (Eze Obiukwu) decided to kill a cow for the people and call for merriment; and other villages which shared in the victory 'hit their chests' and determined that they would also bring their own cows, all of which were then sampled and hauled round the village square, with a view to knowing which village came with the biggest cow. These cows were thereafter killed and used for merriment which was then named 'Asara', coming from the Igbo word '-' which implies merriment. [5] [6]

Climate

In Ukpor, the wet season is warm, oppressive, and overcast and the dry season is hot, muggy, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 67 °F to 88 °F and is rarely below 59 °F or above 91 °F. [7]

Impact of flooding

The community has spent all it has and made desperate efforts to tackle the devastating gully erosion that is currently tearing away the entire community to no avail. [8]

Alor is one of the seven communities comprising the Idemili South Local Government of Anambra State in the southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It is surrounded by seven neighbouring towns, namely Oraukwu, Nnobi, Abatete, Ideani, Uke, Adazi Ani and Nnokwa. Alor has several rivers which names in most cases are derived from the major idol of the village touched by the river – Mmili Ezigbo, Mmili Nwangene, Mmili Ọhọsha, Mmili Ideọhwọlọ, Mmili Iyiogwgwu, and Mmili Ọbịaja.

Nnewi North is a Local Government Area in Anambra State, south-central Nigeria. Nnewi is the only town in Nnewi North LGA. The traditional ruler of Nnewi- Igwe of Nnewi -presently is Igwe Kenneth Orizu the 3rd of which this royal family is from Otolo Nnewi, and for this reason, is regarded as first among equals of the four villages. Other traditional rulers exist in other villages and they oversee the traditional affairs of their respective villages, amongst which are Obi Nnamdi AC Obi (ogidi) who is obi of Uruagu, Obi Umudim And obi Onyekaba Of Nnewichi. In this vein one may ask who is now Obi of Otolo since the royal family of Igwe oversees the traditional affairs of entire nnewi.

Ozubulu is a larger town in Anambra State, Nigeria. It is the headquarters of the Ekwusigo Local Government Area.

Ihembosi(The light of the day) is a town in Anambra State Nigeria, Located 20 miles south-east of the city of Onitsha and 7 miles south of Nnewi. It is under Ekwusigo local government Area of Anambra State. Ihembosi,oftentimes is mistaken for another community in Ihiala local government Area named 'Mbosi' with whom they share a patrilineal bond. These two, traces their origins to Otolo Nnewi and are bounded by their common totem animal 'the african giant white tailed rat'called ewi in the local parlance. It will be noted that Nnewi means 'mother of the white tailed giant rat',and these three communities are forbidden to feast on this rodentia. Ihembosi shares boundaries with Okija, Ukpor and Ozubulu. The community is in Anambra South Senatorial Zone of Anambra State and has erosion challenges that have been there for many years, causing loss of lives and properties. Recently, the Anambra State government under Chukwuma Soludo has taken up the erosion control projects by diverting the flash floods that runs down the hill towards Umuohi village where much of the devastation are being witnessed to Ubu river through some intricate channels of underground drainages.The community also celebrates cultural activities like the New Yam festival. Ihembosi has many schools and colleges with a community library that serves the whole community. The community also has participated in as well as benefitted from different literacy and development activities.

Ebenator is a town in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, south-eastern Nigeria, predominantly occupied by Igbo speaking people. Ebenator has good weather and fertile lands, as it is surrounded by natural water. The Igbo people living around there live in families close to each other and are predominantly Christians.

Anambra North senatorial district in Anambra State covers seven local government areas which include Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Oyi, Ogbaru, Anambra East, Anambra West and Ayamelum. There are 1,392 Polling Units (Pus) and 99 Registration Areas (RAs). Onitsha North LGA INEC Office is the collation centre. A president of the 4th Senate between 1999 and 2000, Chuba Okadigbo is from this district. Tony Nwoye is the current Senator of this senatorial district.

Ihembosi Community Library, is a Nigerian community branch library under the Anambra State Library Board. The public library is located in the Ihembosi community in the Ekwusigo local government area of Anambra State, under Anambra South Senatorial District. It is one of the eleven public libraries in Anambra State built to offer literacy and information services to the residents of the host community and its environs. Ihembosi community library is under the Nnewi Divisional Library which reports directly to the Director of the Anambra State Library Board in Awka.
