Eclectic Warrior is Ian McNabb's tenth solo album, released on Monday, 18 March 2013. The album features backing band Cold Shoulder, formed from previous Liverpool bands The Black Velvets and The Aeroplanes.

Ian McNabb British musician

Robert Ian McNabb is an English singer-songwriter and musician. Previously the frontman of The Icicle Works, McNabb has since embarked on a solo career and performed with Ringo Starr, Neil Young/Crazy Horse, Mike Scott, and Danny Thompson of folk band Pentangle.

The Black Velvets were a rock band from Liverpool, England. The band formed in 2003 and split up in August 2007 after releasing one album.

The Aeroplanes are an English rock band from Liverpool. The Aeroplanes formed in 2003 when Chris Kearney (guitar/vocal), Paul Crowe (guitar/vocal) and Stuart Palethorpe (bass) decided to bring their previous outfit ‘Loveland 1881’ to a close to take their sound in a different direction. They were joined by old school friend Ian McMillan (drums) and the line up was complete. In 2007, bassist Stuart left the band and was replaced by Vicky Edwards. The band released their much anticipated debut album ‘Broken Hearts and Maladies’ in November 2008 to positive reviews.

PledgeMusic and release

The album was marketed as a PledgeMusic project, asking fans to 'pledge' for different rarities, concert tickets and versions of the album. [1] Anyone making a pledge on the site would receive a minimum of a "New Full Band Electric Album download + updates". 5% of any money raised after the goal is reached would go to Teenage Cancer Trust. The album was originally scheduled to be released on Monday, 4 February 2013, after the pledge threshold was reached on 27 October 2012, two days after its launch. Before the original release date however, Ian wrote an apology to tell fans the release date had been postphoned until 18 March 2013 (due to the unavailability of the planned recording studio). Ian described the unusual release of the album as a "little way of saying thank you... as well as a great charity cause." [1] As of late December 2012, the Album was confirmed, via McNabb's Facebook page, to be titled 'Eclectic Warrior'. [2]

PledgeMusic is an online direct-to-fan music platform, launched in August 2009, that was started to facilitate musicians reaching out to their fanbase to pre-sell, market, and distribute music projects including recordings, music videos, and concerts. Broadly speaking it bears some similarities to such platforms as ArtistShare, Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Patreon, RocketHub and Sellaband.

Teenage Cancer Trust is a cancer care and support charity in the UK that exists to improve the cancer experience of young people aged 13–24. Founded in 1990, the charity's key service is providing specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals. It also trains and funds staff who are teenage cancer specialists. The units are dedicated areas for teenage and young adult patients, who are involved in their concept and creation. Medical facilities on the units are equipped with computers, TVs and game consoles.

Post-release and reception

The album was released digitally on 18 March 2013, the pledge project reaching 304% of its goal with a total of 905 pledges. The album received a good critical reception. Dave Jennings of LouderThanWar.com gave the album a positive review, [3] stating "This is a tour de force of an album with the power to take the roof of many a venue".
