Ed Baker (Edward Baker) is a British entomologist, bioacoustician and orthopterist at the Natural History Museum, London.
Baker completed a bachelor's degree in physics at Imperial College London. His initial research at the Natural History Museum, London focussed on biodiversity informatics including work relating to implementing Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG), [1] and building systems for the broader community including development of the Scratchpads virtual research environment [2] and the eMonocot project.[ citation needed ]. It was during this time he discovered the museum's library of recorded insect sounds and begin the process of digitising these to make them available via the BioAcoustica project, [3] and separately began work on open hardware sensors for environmental monitoring. [4]
While at the museum he was seconded to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature as an informatics advisor, as well as helping with the management of Cases brought before the commission.
In 2017 Baker became a researcher in the Electronic Engineering faculty at the University of York combining his interest in sensors and entomology to design devices for the automated recognition of the songs of orthoptera in the field. He has subsequently collaborated with historians at the university on the archive of the Anti-Locust Research Centre held at the Natural History Museum, London.
In 2022 Baker returned to the Natural History Museum, London as acoustic biology researcher to continue his work on sensor networks, automated acoustic monitoring, machine learning and the use of acoustic and vibrational communication by animals. This work has a particular focus on the use of acoustic techniques in heavily urban areas using high-density microphone arrays.
The species Calvisia bakeri Seow-Choen, 2017 is named after Baker.
Baker was credited for supplying recordings of mole crickets for the film The Duke of Burgundy directed by Peter Strickland, and as an animal wrangler for a cockroach in the Marianna Simnett film Blue Roses.
Baker was involved in Sophie Scott's Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 2017 demonstrating hissing cockroaches.
The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) is the world’s largest open access digital library for biodiversity literature and archives. BHL operates as a worldwide consortium of natural history, botanical, research, and national libraries working together to address this challenge by digitizing the natural history literature held in their collections and making it freely available for open access as part of a global "biodiversity community". The BHL consortium works with the international taxonomic community, publishers, bioinformaticians, and information technology professionals to develop tools and services to facilitate greater access, interoperability, and reuse of content and data. BHL provides a range of services, data exports, and APIs to allow users to download content, harvest source data files, and reuse materials for research purposes. Through taxonomic intelligence tools developed by Global Names Architecture, BHL indexes the taxonomic names throughout the collection, allowing researchers to locate publications about specific taxa. In partnership with the Internet Archive and through local digitization efforts, BHL's portal provides free access to hundreds of thousands of volumes, comprising over 59 million pages, from the 15th-21st centuries.
A taxonomic database is a database created to hold information on biological taxa – for example groups of organisms organized by species name or other taxonomic identifier – for efficient data management and information retrieval. Taxonomic databases are routinely used for the automated construction of biological checklists such as floras and faunas, both for print publication and online; to underpin the operation of web-based species information systems; as a part of biological collection management ; as well as providing, in some cases, the taxon management component of broader science or biology information systems. They are also a fundamental contribution to the discipline of biodiversity informatics.
Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is a technology to enable monitoring of patients outside of conventional clinical settings, such as in the home or in a remote area, which may increase access to care and decrease healthcare delivery costs. RPM involves the constant remote care of patients by their physicians, often to track physical symptoms, chronic conditions, or post-hospitalization rehab.
Saxatilomys paulinae is a species of murid rodent native to central Laos and Vietnam, separated to a monotypic genus Saxatilomys. It was first discovered in the Khammouan Limestone National Biodiversity Conservation Area in Khammouan Province, Laos, and also been found in the Vietnamese province of Quang Bình. It is the only known species in the genus Saxatilomys. The genus name is derived from the Latin saxatilis, meaning "among the rocks" and the Greek mys, meaning mouse or rat.
The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) is an online repository of information about Australian plants, animals, and fungi. Development started in 2006. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is an organisation significantly involved in the development of the ALA. The Atlas of Living Australia is the Australian node of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility. The ALA is being used to help assess suitability of revegetation projects by determining species vulnerability to climatic and atmospheric change.

Madarellus undulatus is a species of weevils belonging to the Baridinae subfamily. It is 2.8–4.5 millimetres (0.11–0.18 in) long and have brown coloured head and black or sometimes reddish body. The prothorax is glossy and somewhat punctate with striate elytron. M. undulatus can be found in both Canada and in the United States. Larvae feed on poison ivy and Parthenocissus quinquefolia.
