The Eddie Gilbert Memorial Show was an annual professional wrestling memorial event produced by the IWA Mid-South (IWA-MS) promotion from 1997 to 1998. [1] It was held in memory of wrestler "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert who died of a heart attack in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico on February 18, 1995. [2] The shows were held separately from the National Wrestling Alliance-affiliated Eddie Gilbert Memorial Brawl, which ran from 1996 to 1999, and featured wrestlers and other talent who performed with Gilbert during his career. IWA Mid-South was among the promotions accused of financially exploiting Gilbert's death. [3] "Nature Boy" Buddy Landel, who regularly performed for the NWA shows, initially declined Ian Rotten's offer to appear for the IWA Mid-South version for this reason. [4] When Austin Idol failed to appear for the main event at the 1998 edition, Rotten publicly announced that he had filed criminal charges against the wrestler. [5]

Rotten defended holding the shows. Though he did not personally know Gilbert, a number of IWA Mid-South mainstays had worked with the late wrestler. IWA Mid-South Heavyweight Champion Bull Pain, for example, defeated Gilbert and Jeff Jarrett for the USWA Tag Team Championship in 1991. [6] Feeling that Gilbert has been largely forgotten by modern wrestling fans, Rotten was motivated to hold the Ted Petty Invitational and Chris Candido Cup Tag Team Tournament during the 2000s for the same reasons. [7] The shows were endorsed by the Gilbert family with Tommy and Doug Gilbert having prominent roles. A portion of the show's proceeds were donated to a college scholarship fund for high school seniors in Lexington, Tennessee; Eddie Gilbert's mother, Peggy Gilbert, raffled off one of the late wrestler's ring jackets for the fund. The Eddie Gilbert Memorial Show (1997) was a professional wrestling memorial event produced by IWA Mid-South (IWA-MS), which took place on March 13, 1997, at the Derby Sports Arena in Louisville, Kentucky. Ten professional wrestling matches were scheduled on the event's card, one of which involved championships, with two main matches. The first main event match was a Chain match between Doug Gilbert and Terry Funk, which Gilbert won. The second was a match between Dory Funk, Jr. and Tommy Gilbert which ended in a 20-minute time-limit draw. One of the featured matches on the undercard was Vampire Warrior versus Vladimir Koloff, which Vampire Warrior won by pinfall. The other was American Kickboxer versus Tarek the Great for the IWA Mid-South Light Heavyweight Championship, which American Kickboxer won, also by pinfall. Eddie Gilbert Memorial Show (1998)

The Eddie Gilbert Memorial Show (1998) was a professional wrestling memorial event produced by IWA Mid-South (IWA-MS), which took place on February 21, 1998, at the Derby Sports Arena in Louisville, Kentucky. Eight professional wrestling matches were featured on the card, one of which involved championships. The main event was a tag team match pitting the team of Doug Gilbert and Dutch Mantel against the team of "The Beast" Dan Severn and Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy, [13] which Gilbert and Mantel won. Buddy Landel was the special guest referee. The predominant match on the undercard was between Kip Morris and Rip Rogers, which Morris won by disqualification. Another featured match was Bull Pain, who held both the IWA Mid-South Heavyweight and Television Championships, versus Chip Fairway. The IWA World Championship is the major title in the IWA Mid-South based in Louisville, Kentucky. The title debuted at the "Crowning of a Champion" event on April 3, 1997, when Tower of Doom won a twelve-man tournament. There have been a total of 125 reigns among 59 champions and 19 vacancies. Tower of Doom was the inaugural champion, having defeated Ox Harley and Bull Pain in a tournament final three-way match on April 4, 1997, at Crowning of Champion. On June 14, 2022, Jake Crist vacated the title after failing to receive payment. As a result, the company ceased operations and the title was deactivated.

The Ted Petty Invitational tournament is an independent wrestling tournament in North America, run and promoted by Independent Wrestling Association Mid-South. Created as the Sweet Science Sixteen in 2000 by Ian Rotten, the tournament was originally supposed to showcase the top technical independent wrestlers. After the death of Ted Petty in September 2002, Rotten changed the name to honor his friend. The tournament was expanded to 24 participants, with a three-way final, in 2003. Over the years, the tournament has attracted numerous famous independent wrestlers from Ken Anderson, A.J. Styles to James Gibson.

The Eddie Gilbert Memorial Brawl was an annual professional wrestling event held between 1996 and 1999 as a tribute to wrestler Eddie Gilbert and featured talent from the National Wrestling Alliance, World Wrestling Federation and Extreme Championship Wrestling, as well as local and established independent wrestlers. Each year, the event would feature the Gilbert family receiving a plaque from promoter Dennis Coralluzzo. In 1998, the show came under some criticism when Coralluzzo was alleged to have used the in-ring plaque presentation to publicly attack Paul Heyman, as did the Gilbert family, provoking a verbal altercation between himself and ECW fans in attendance.

Richard Link is an American semi-retired professional wrestler, trainer and promoter. He wrestled throughout Canada and the United States for the National Wrestling Alliance during the 1970s and 80s under a number of ringnames, most notably, as M.E.B. in NWA Central States and as Man Mountain Link in the Continental Wrestling Association where he was among the "monster heels" who challenged AWA Southern Heavyweight Champion Jerry "The King" Lawler and was involved in the ongoing feud between Lawler and Andy Kaufman. His career spans over a decade working in numerous independent promotions throughout the United States including the American Wrestling Federation, Extreme Championship Wrestling, Cueball Carmichael's Independent Professional Wrestling Alliance, Doug Flex's International Pro Wrestling, Independent Superstars of Professional Wrestling, House of Pain Wrestling Federation / National Wrestling League, and the National Wrestling Alliance.
