Burroughs originally submitted the novel to a number of the "slick" magazines: Liberty, The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and Ladies' Home Journal. All rejected the story.

The Oakdale Affair and The Rider is a collection of two short novels by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs. "The Oakdale Affair", a contemporary tale, was written in 1917 under the working title of "Bridge and the Oskaloosa Kid", and is a partial sequel to The Mucker (1914/1916), as Bridge, the protagonist, had been a secondary character in the earlier work. It was first published in Blue Book Magazine in March 1918. "The Rider", a Ruritanian romance, was written in 1915 and first published as "H.R.H. the Rider" as a serial in All-Story Weekly from December 14–18, 1918. The first book publication of the two stories brought them together in one volume as The Oakdale Affair and The Rider, issued by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. in February 1937; the book was reprinted by Grosset & Dunlap in 1937, 1938 and 1940. Both works have since been published separately.

Ulysses Paxton is a fictional character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in his novel The Master Mind of Mars. Within the narrative framework of the novel, Captain Paxton, United States Army Infantry, is a fan of Burroughs' Barsoom series, and after having a shell blow off his legs during trench warfare in World War I, he finds himself drawn across the gulfs of space to Mars like John Carter before him. He sends Burroughs a first person manuscript of his adventures on the dying planet, which Burroughs publishes.

Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips is a series of books collecting the complete Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan comic strip written and drawn by Russ Manning, an American daily and Sunday strip title originally published in newspapers between 1967 and 1979, via United Feature Syndicate. The first volume of the series was awarded the Eisner Award in the category Best Archival Collection/Project—Strips in 2014. The series was published by The Library of American Comics from 2013 to 2015.
