Edmundson Parkes (1904-1997) was President and CEO of United Gas Corporation, a major oil company from its inception in 1930 to its hostile takeover and subsequent forced merger with Pennzoil in 1968. [2] [3] [4] He was one of the lone holdovers when Pennzoil convened a new board of directors to manage the company and its subsidiaries. [5]

Parkes was born in 1904 in Jefferson County, Alabama to Major William J. Parkes and Elmira Melissa Huey. [6] Parkes' father was a former commandant of the University of Alabama and captain in the Alabama State Militia who raised a troop to fight for Teddy Roosevelt in the Spanish–American War. [7] [8] [9] Parkes was named for his grandmother, Mary Edmundson, herself a granddaughter of George A. Wilson, a former Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Tennessee Freemasons. [10] [11] Parkes graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1925. He worked his way through the ranks of the United Gas Corporation, starting with what would become a company subsidiary in 1928. After several promotions, he was named president of United Gas Pipeline Company and Union Producing Company. He was named president and CEO of the parent corporation, United Gas, in 1958. [1] He was a past president of the American Gas Association, and served as chairman of the Committee on Natural Gas Reserves of A.G.A. He was also active in a number of professional and civic organizations. [1]

He married Julia Washburn of Monroe, Louisiana, and had two daughters, Myra and Ruth, of Shreveport. The former married Dr. Paul Winder, also of Shreveport, and had issue. [12] Parkes' wife was a direct descendant of Myles Standish, as was the wife of Parkes' rival and Pennzoil founder, George H. W. Bush. [13]

Enbridge's pipeline system is the longest in North America and the largest oil export pipeline network in the world. Its crude oil system consists of 28,661 kilometres of pipelines. Its 38,300 kilometre natural gas pipeline system connects multiple Canadian provinces, several US states, and the Gulf of Mexico. The company was formed by Imperial Oil in 1949 as the Interprovincial Pipe Line Company Limited to transport Alberta oil to refineries. Over time, it has grown through acquisition of other existing pipeline companies and the expansion of their projects.

Gum Deniz is an offshore oil and gas field in the Caspian Sea, located 21 km (13 mi) southeast of Baku, Azerbaijan. The field has been in operation since 1955. Gum Deniz has produced approximately 28.9 million tonnes of oil and 27 billion cubic meters of gas to date. In March 2009, Azerbaijan drilled its last well No. 478 in Gum Deniz field before new production sharing agreement for development of the field was signed with a foreign company in December 2009. The well produces 50 tonnes of oil on daily basis.

United Gas Corporation was a major oil company from its inception in 1930 to its hostile takeover and subsequent forced merger with Pennzoil in 1968. Headquartered in Shreveport, Louisiana, United and its major subsidiaries, Union Producing Company, United Gas Pipeline Company, Atlas Processing, UGC Instruments, and Duval Mining, performed integrated exploration, production, processing, and distribution of oil and natural gas and other raw materials. Second only to Gulf Oil in size and scope, United Gas was one of the first natural gas transmission companies. In 1968, United was merged into Pennzoil, and the firm was renamed Pennzoil United, Inc. The retail gas distribution assets of United were spun off into Entex Energy in 1970. United Gas Pipeline stock was distributed to Pennzoil shareholders in 1974, and that company was eventually restructured as United Energy Resources, Inc., which was, in turn, acquired by Midcon Corporation.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Successors of Standard Oil</span> Companies descended from Standard Oil

Following the 1911 Supreme Court ruling that found Standard Oil was an illegal monopoly, the company was broken up into 34 different entities, divided primarily by region and activity. Many of these companies later became part of the Seven Sisters, which dominated global petroleum production in the 20th century, and became a majority of today's largest investor-owned oil companies, with most tracing their roots back to Standard Oil. Some descendants of Standard Oil were also given exclusive rights to the Standard Oil name.
