EdoJobs training on cosmetology

Edojobs is an initiative of the Edo State government in Nigeria under the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki. The initiative is aimed at tackling the high rate of unemployment in Edo State through skills acquisition and empowerment programs, in collaboration with various private and public organizations in Edo State. [1] The initiative was launched in 2016 as part of Obaseki's promise to create 200,000 new jobs for the region's youth. [2]

Background

Based on 2011 statistics, Edo State has an unemployment rate of 35.2%. [3] The program aims to ensure that residents of the State get filled into the various job openings in the state. [1] EdoJobs is run by the Skills Development Programme of the Edo State Governor. It was headed by his Senior Special Adviser on skills development and Job Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare until 2019 when the Agency was signed into law and Mrs. Ukinebo Dare was appointed as the managing director of the Agency. It is now officially known as Edo State Skills Development Agency but still popularly called Edojobs by citizens. [4]

Impact

The National Bureau of Statistics in 2020 released a report that showed Edo State having the lowest unemployment rate in the South South of Nigeria. Also while there was a rise in unemployment in Nigeria, Edo State witnessed a drop in unemployment. [10]

Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) works towards assisting small and medium scale enterprises to overcome poor infrastructure in the management of business operations and accessing financial services amongst other challenges. Ogwa is a town in Esan West Local Government Area in Edo State, Nigeria. It is among the constituent communities of Esanland. The people of Ogwa speak the Esan language. The language of the Esan people shares the same name as the name of the land itself. Esan and Ishan are interchangeably used to refer to the same place, language and people. Ishan is the anglicized variant for Esan. The Ogwa people in Edo State identify themselves as Esan or Ishan people. Ogwa has four clans: Eguare, Ukpogu, Izogen and Eha. These clans are headed by most elderly men in each of them.

Edo Technical College, sometimes referred to as Benin Technical College is a technical and vocational institution located in Edo State, Nigeria. The school provides vocational and technical skills to students in order to promote entrepreneurship among youths in Edo State. The Edo State Task Force Against Human Trafficking (ETAHT) is a Nigerian task force established by the Edo State Government to tackle human trafficking and irregular migration in the state, as well as the stigma that comes with it, State Task Force against human trafficking, is currently replicated in a host of southern states such as Ondo, Delta, Oyo, Lagos, Enugu, Ekiti States, etc. Prof. Yinka Omorogbe the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Edo State, is also the chairman of the task force. In the year 2017, Mr Godwin Obaseki inaugurated the state task force on anti-human trafficking. The members of the task force were inaugurated at the Government House in Benin City, the state capital. The Edo Task Force Against Human Trafficking is said to have received about 5,619 returnees from Libya en-route Europe from 2017 till date.

Ndudi Godwin Elumelu is a Nigerian politician representing Aniocha and Oshimili federal constituency in the House of Representatives, He is currently the Minority leader of the House of Representatives. and a younger brother to Tony Elumelu.
