Eduardo Mezzacapo (1832–1898) was an Italian mandolinist, recognized as a virtuoso. He was also a composer, and a performer, organizing and playing in a mandolin quartet in France. Although he died before recording technology, his quartet did get recorded between 1905 and 1910. He was also the founder of l'Ecole de mandoline française (The French Mandolin School). [1]
At the time that he was teaching in France and at the school, the mandolin was regaining popularity. There had been a decline since the early 19th century, but around the beginning of the 20th century from the 1880s to the 1920s there was a mandolin "craze" in which the instrument enjoyed new popularity. [2] [3] The movement in France was enough to found a movement of French mandolin artists, including Gabriel Leone, Giovanni Fouchetti and Gervasio. Mezzacapo "became the most important exponent of his time," through his performing and organizing and teaching. [4]
Mezzacapo studied the mandolin in Naples, but went to France before he was 20. He performed with his family there, and their success was such that they performed Verdi's Othello in the Opéra Garnier. He also directed the Casino of Cannes orchestra, in the lounge of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg. His work led him to be given credit for adding to the mandolin's successful rise as an orchestral instrument. [1] [4] He was also given the honor of having an orchestral work dedicated to him, the Enrico Marucelli work Valtzer Fantastico. [5]
There is some confusion as to when Eduardo Mezzacapo died. His death date is given as 1898 [1] and 1947. [6] The later date may refer to a son.

Salvator Léonardi was a mandolin virtuoso, teacher and composer. He taught in Egypt, Malta, London and Paris for more than 20 years, and also toured as a performer. Léonardi learned mandolin and guitar from an uncle, but went on to become a professional musician, studying the violin at a Naples conservatory. He won awards as a solo mandolinist at international music competitions in Florence and Rome.
Jules Cottin (1868–1922) was a mandolin virtuoso who played in Paris from the 1890s. A pupil of the guitarist Jacques Bosch, he became part of the mandolin revival, which revitalized the instrument after its long decline in the 19th century. He was part of a group of virtuosi mandolinists, including Giuseppe Silvestri, Ferdinando de Cristofaro, and Jean Pietrapertosa, who played before enthusiastic Paris audiences. He was also a composer and author, writing the 1891 mandolin method book, Celèbre Méthode Complète Theoretique et Pratique de Mandoline.
Jean Pietrapertosa (1855–1940) was a composer and virtuoso of the mandolin who performed in Paris in the 1880s. He taught the mandolin and wrote a two-volume mandolin method book, Méthode de mandolin, published in Paris in 1892. He also organized a mandolin orchestra.
Edgar Bara (1876–1962) was a mandolinist, author and composer. He wrote the method book Méthode de Mandoline et Banjoline, published 1903 in the United States, one of the few from that era which is still in print today, in France. He was also a conductor of a mandolin orchestra in Paris, the Cercle Mandoliniste in 1907.
Giovanni Fouchetti published one of the earliest method books for the mandolin, c. 1771. According to Philip J. Bone, Fouchetti was also known as Fouquet, and he lived in Paris during the 18th Century. He was a professor there in 1788. He is also credited with creating a Parisian school of mandolinists, along with Eduardo Mezzacapo, Gabriele Leone, and Gervasio.
Clément Loret was an organist, music educator, and composer of Belgian origin, French naturalized.
Charles Le Thière was a British composer, arranger and flautist. He was the son of a goldsmith and jeweller Thomas William Tomkins and his wife Eliza Tomkins, who had a store and company in Clerkenwell.
Léonie Antoinette Tonel was a French pianist and composer.
Esprit Charles Henri Ghys was a French pianist, organist, composer and arranger of Belgian parentage, who is primarily known today as the first piano teacher of Maurice Ravel.
Marc Burty was a French composer and music teacher for Lycée de Lyon who also went by the pseudonym, Georges Bull, in some of his works. He became interested in the harmonium after building a relationship with Alfred Lefébure-Wély in Paris who introduced him to the instruments, in which Burty later taught the instrument in the Lyon-based institution. He mainly wrote music pieces for the piano and were published in Paris between 1859 and 1900.
