Eduardo Michaelsen (18 April 1920 – 27 January 2010) was a Cuban painter. He was known mainly for naïve painting depicting Cuban folklore.

Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface. The medium is commonly applied to the base with a brush, but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. The final work is also called a painting.
Naïve art is usually defined as visual art that is created by a person who lacks the formal education and training that a professional artist undergoes. When this aesthetic is emulated by a trained artist, the result is sometimes called primitivism, pseudo-naïve art, or faux naïve art.

Born as Eduardo Apolonio Michaelsen y Rivery in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, in 1944 he studied for five months at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro" in Havana. In 1967 he created a Course on Museography, at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana. Among visual arts he worked mainly in paintings.

It was founded in 1818 at the Convent of San Alejandro by the French painter, Jean Baptiste Vermay, who was its first director. It is located today in a monumental building built in the early 1940s.

From 1955 until 1972 he was Technical Assistant in the museum's restoration department. He arrived in 1980 in the United States via the Mariel Boatlift, [1] and resided in San Francisco, California until his death in 2010, aged 89 in San Francisco, California. A short documentary film titled "Eduardo Michaelsen -Color y Tradición" about his life and artistic creations was produced by Cuban film directors Rafael Matos and Rafael Arzuaga.
