The Education Amendment Act, 2024 is an act of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta relating to restrictions on sex education.
The legislation requires that parents and guardians opt-in to allow sex education to be provided to their children, including all educaiton relating to gender identity, sexual orientation or sexuality. [1] Under the legislation, teachers would have to allow for 30 days to respond to a notification that there would be material on these topics. [2]
Third party resources and speakers would have to be vetted by the provincial government. [2]
Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights criticized the legislation, describing it as having a "chilling effect" on sex education. [3]
Edmonton Public Schools unanimously passed a resolution opposing the legislation. [4]
The act was passed alongside the Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2024 (No. 2) and the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act . [5]
