The Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2024 (No. 2) is an act of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta relating to restricting the provision of gender-affirming care for individuals under the age of 18.
Minors under the age of 15 are prohibited from receiving hormone replacement therapy under the legislation. [1] The legislation also restricts physicians from performing gender-affirming top surgery and bottom surgery on minors. [1]
The legislation requires to the patient complaint resolution process requirements on primary health care providers. [2]
The legislation was heavily criticised by the Alberta Medical Association. [3]
In May 2025, the Canadian Medical Association filed a lawsuit challenging the legislation on the basis it violates the freedom of conscience of physicians in Alberta. [3] [4]
The act was passed alongside the Education Amendment Act, 2024 and the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act . [5]
