Edward Vilga (born 1963 in Manchester, Connecticut) is an American yoga teacher, author, and director. [1] [2] His work is often themed around transformation, connections in spirituality and wealth, and the power of forgiveness stemming from his experiences as an American yoga teacher. [3]
Vilga graduated from Yale University after majoring in English Literature. [4]
After graduating from Yale, Vilga took jobs in film projection, beginning by working for documentary filmmaker Helen C. Whitney. He was also the associate producer of "Tilt 23 1/2," an international television news magazine produced by Fujisanskei Communications that aired in 72 countries. [4]
Vilga produced numerous Off-Broadway productions with Watermark Theater, including the Obie Award-Winning My Left Breast by Susan Miller. [5] [6] He then began writing, directing and producing his own projects in a variety of media. [7]
Vilga is the author of Yoga in Bed (Running Press; 2005) [8] [9] and Yoga for Suits (Running Press; 2006) which have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Those books and DVDs have been featured in People Magazine, Oprah’s O Magazine, and LIVE WITH KELLY! [10]
He also wrote Acting Now: Conversations on Craft and Career (Rutgers University Press; 1997), a collection of interviews. [11]
Edward Vilga’s novel Downward Dog was released in paperback by Diversion Books in June 2014. [12] The novel incorporates yoga poses (Asanas) and tells the story of a man who decides to become a private yoga teacher in New York City. [13]
His book The Yoga of Money Manifesto was released by Stone Heap Publishing in March 2017 [14] and hit #1 for all of New Thought.
"Miracle in Rwanda," a play Edward Vilga directed and co-created with performer Leslie Lewis, has toured the world with more than 150 performances over 6 continents. The Village Voice said that Lewis’ "one-woman performance makes riveting theater". [15] Broadway Baby called the piece “An engaging and important theatrical work with absolutely no gimmicks" and noted that "with the combination of the strong performance and beautiful writing, Miracle in Rwanda is an absolute must-see." [16] [17] [18]
“Miracle In Rwanda” had a six week Off-Broadway run in April and May 2019 at the Lion Theater. [19] [20]
The play was also featured at the United Nations in a special performance for the 25th Commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. [21] [22] [23]
Vilga wrote and directed the feature film "Dead Broke" (Warner Brothers DVD, 2006). It won several best direct-to-DVD awards and on May 3, 1999 in a joint venture with the TriBeCa Film Center, Microsoft and ifilm.com, became the first film to debut simultaneously on the Internet and the big screen. Edward Vilga also associate produced the independent film “With Child” (Summer Hill Films, 2014) which was nominated for Best World Showcase at the Soho Film Festival. [25] [26]

The Sherman Brothers were an American songwriting duo that specialized in musical films, made up of brothers Robert Sherman and Richard Sherman. An āsana is a body posture, originally and still a general term for a sitting meditation pose, and later extended in hatha yoga and modern yoga as exercise, to any type of position, adding reclining, standing, inverted, twisting, and balancing poses. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali define "asana" as "[a position that] is steady and comfortable". Patanjali mentions the ability to sit for extended periods as one of the eight limbs of his system. Asanas are also called yoga poses or yoga postures in English.
Andrew Harvey is a British author, religious scholar and teacher of mystic traditions, known primarily for his popular nonfiction books on spiritual or mystical themes, beginning with his 1983 A Journey in Ladakh. He is the author of over 30 books, including, The Hope, A Guide to Sacred Activism, The Direct Path, the critically acclaimed Way of Passion: A Celebration of Rumi, The Return of the Mother and Son of Man. Sun Salutation, also called Surya Namaskar or Salute to the Sun, is a practice in yoga as exercise incorporating a flow sequence of some twelve linked asanas. The asana sequence was first recorded as yoga in the early 20th century, though similar exercises were in use in India before that, for example among wrestlers. The basic sequence involves moving from a standing position into Downward and Upward Dog poses and then back to the standing position, but many variations are possible. The set of 12 asanas is dedicated to the Hindu solar deity, Surya. In some Indian traditions, the positions are each associated with a different mantra.
Downward Dog Pose or Downward-facing Dog Pose, also called Adho Mukha Svanasana, is an inversion asana, often practised as part of a flowing sequence of poses, especially Surya Namaskar, the Salute to the Sun. The asana is commonly used in modern yoga as exercise. The asana does not have formally named variations, but several playful variants are used to assist beginning practitioners to become comfortable in the pose.
Cobra Pose or Bhujangasana is a reclining back-bending asana in hatha yoga and modern yoga as exercise. It is also performed in a cycle of asanas in Surya Namaskar, Salute to the Sun, as an alternative to Urdhva Mukha Svanasana, Upward Dog Pose. The Yin Yoga form is Sphinx Pose.
Sivananda Yoga is a spiritual yoga system founded by Vishnudevananda; it includes the use of asanas but is not limited to them as in systems of yoga as exercise. He named this system, as well as the international Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres organization responsible for propagating its teachings, after his guru, Sivananda with the mission 'to spread the teachings of yoga and the message of world peace' which has since been refined to 'practice and teach the ancient yogic knowledge for health, peace, unity in diversity and self-realization.'
Bakasana, and the similar Kakasana are balancing asanas in hatha yoga and modern yoga as exercise. In all variations, these are arm balancing poses in which hands are planted on the floor, shins rest upon upper arms, and feet lift up. The poses are often confused, but traditionally Kakasana has arms bent, Bakasana has the arms straight.
Viparita Karani or legs up the wall pose is both an asana and a mudra in hatha yoga. In modern yoga as exercise, it is commonly a fully supported pose using a wall and sometimes a pile of blankets, where it is considered a restful practice. As a mudra it was practised using any preferred inversion, such as a headstand or shoulderstand. The purpose of the mudra was to reverse the downward flow of vital fluid being lost from the head, using gravity.
A vinyasa is a smooth transition between asanas in flowing styles of modern yoga as exercise such as Vinyasa Krama Yoga and Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, especially when movement is paired with the breath.

Utthita Vasisthasana or Side Plank pose is a balancing asana in modern yoga as exercise.
The standing asanas are the yoga poses or asanas with one or both feet on the ground, and the body more or less upright. They are among the most distinctive features of modern yoga as exercise. Until the 20th century there were very few of these, the best example being Vrikshasana, Tree Pose. From the time of Krishnamacharya in Mysore, many standing poses have been created. Two major sources of these asanas have been identified: the exercise sequence Surya Namaskar ; and the gymnastics widely practised in India at the time, based on the prevailing physical culture.
