Edwina Cornish

Edwina Cecily Cornish, AO, FTSE is an Australian biologist and academic, specialising in biotechnology. Between 2012 and 2016 she was Provost and Senior Vice-President of Monash University. She was previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Adelaide and then at Monash University.

Early life and education

Cornish studied at the University of Melbourne, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc (Hons)) degree in biochemistry and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in microbiology. [1]

Career

From 2000 to 2004, Cornish was Professor of Biotechnology and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Adelaide. [2] [3]

Cornish joined Monash University as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) in 2004, and was promoted to Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2009. [4] Between 2012 and 2016 she was Provost (Chief Academic Officer) and Senior Vice-President of Monash University. [1]

In November 2015, Cornish was appointed a board member of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation for a five-year term. [5] [6]

Honours

In 2001, Cornish was awarded the Centenary Medal "for service to Australian society in biotechnology and university administration". [4] In the 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) "for distinguished service to higher education, to advances in biotechnology and horticultural genetic modification, and through fostering of partnerships with government, industry and the community". [7]

On 13 March 2013, Cornish was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women "for providing inspirational leadership as a pioneer in the biotechnology industry and as a transformational leader at Monash University". [4] [8] She is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (FTSE). [4]

Monash University Malaysia

Raymond Leslie Martin was an Australian chemistry professor and university administrator. He was Vice-Chancellor of Monash University from 1977 to 1987.

Sir Rupert Horace Myers, was an Australian metallurgist, academic and university administrator, who was the third vice-chancellor of the University of New South Wales from 1969 to 1981. He was the second person to be awarded a PhD by an Australian University. He died on 21 February 2019 on his 98th birthday.

Genevieve Bell Australian anthropologist

Genevieve Bell is an Australian anthropologist best known for her work at the intersection of cultural practice and technological development. Bell is the Director of the Autonomy, Agency and Assurance Institute, which was co-founded by the Australian National University (ANU) and CSIRO’s Data61, and a Distinguished Professor of the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science. She holds the university's inaugural Florence Violet McKenzie Chair and is the first SRI International Engelbart Distinguished Fellow. Bell is a Senior Fellow at Intel, where she was formerly a Vice President directing the company's Corporate Sensing & Insights group. She is widely published, and holds 13 patents.

Alex Zelinsky

Alexander ‘Alex’ Zelinsky, is an Australian computer scientist, systems engineer and roboticist. His career spans innovation, science and technology, research and development, commercial start-ups and education. Prof Zelinsky is Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Newcastle joining the university in November 2018. He was the Chief Defence Scientist of Australia from March 2012 until November 2018. As Chief Defence Scientist he led Defence Science and Technology for Australia's Department of Defence.

Tanya Monro Australian physicist

Professor Tanya Mary Monro FAA FTSE FOSA FAIP GAICD is an Australian physicist known for her work in photonics. She has been Australia's Chief Defence Scientist since 8 March 2019. Prior to that she was the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Innovation (DVCR&I) at the University of South Australia. She was awarded the ARC Georgina Sweet Australian Laureate Fellowship in 2013. She was the inaugural chair of photonics, the inaugural director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale Biophotonics and the inaugural director of the Institute for Photonics & Advanced Sensing (IPAS), and the inaugural director of the Centre of Expertise in Photonics (CoEP) within the School of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Adelaide. Monro has remained an adjunct professor of physics at the University of Adelaide following her departure from the institution.

She is a Director of Compass Housing Services Co Ltd, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, the Australian Science Media Centre and a member of the Council of the University of South Australia.
