Eghosa Anglican Grammar School is a secondary school located along New Lagos road in the ancient city of Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. [1] [2]

History

Eghosa Anglican Grammar School was first established in 1954 as Adolor College by Osaze Igbinokpogie on a piece of land given to him by Mr. Enaruwa, [3] with help from Oba Akenzua II, the reigning Oba of the Benin Kingdom at the time. Shortly after the establishment of the school, funding became scarce, and to avoid closing down the school, Igbinokpogie had to transfer the ownership of the school to the Anglican Mission and the name of the school became Eghosa Anglican Grammar School. [4] [5]

Eghosa Anglican Grammar School enrolled students in the West African School Certificate (WASC) examination for the first time in 1963. Due to its encouraging performance in the 1963 WASC examination, the school witnessed a strong and gradual growth in its students population to the extent that it was expanded from 1 arm per class to 3 arms per class in the 1965 admission year. This set of students who were admitted in 1965 subsequently graduated in 1969 in the midst of the Nigerian Civil War (from 1967 to 1970).

The school continues to witness steady growth in its population and academic performance. Then during the government of Prof. Ambrose Folorunsho Alli, [6] the former Governor of the old Bendel state of Nigeria, all missionary schools were taken over by the Bendel state government and Eghosa Anglican Grammar School was not left out. The Bendel State government instituted a free education program [7] which led to the sudden increase in the population of Eghosa Anglican Grammar School beyond its capacity. This led to a gradual decline in the quality of education. In 2004, the government of Edo State under Chief Lucky Igbinedion formulated a policy to return some mission schools to their original owners due to poor funding, which led to Eghosa Anglican Grammar School returning to Anglican Mission. [8] The Eghosa Old Boys Association (EGHOBA), which is the alumni association of all former students of the school, have contributed personally and collectively to reconstruct and rehabilitate the school. [4]

Curriculum

Eghosa Anglican Grammar School has gone through many changes in its educational structure. It initially began as a boarding school with optional day students, then was converted to full day school when the Bendel state government took over its management in the 1980s, and now it is back to boarding school after it was returned to the Anglican Mission. The curriculum is in compliance with the 3-3 format of secondary school education in Nigeria, which is 3 years of Junior Secondary School (JSS) leading to the enrollment for the Junior School Certificate Examination (JSCE) and 3 years of Senior Secondary School (SSS) leading to the enrollment for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).[ citation needed ]

Eghosa School Anthem

Eghosa Anglican Grammar School is among the notable schools in Nigeria that have their own unique School Anthems, here reproduced below:

"We are the students of Eghosa Grammar School, God bless us all.

"In all our endeavours, we hope to do our best. Grant this, O Lord, we pray, in Jesus' name.

"In unity and strength Which is our own motto We are steadfast, to always do the right, anytime, any day Grant this, O Lord, we pray in Jesus' name."

The above School Anthem of Eghosa Anglican Grammar School was produced and adopted in 1970. Not surprisingly, the School Anthem was authored by a distinguished old boy of the school who graduated in 1970, Dr. Godwill Aghatise Ogboghodo [9] A very distinguished and accomplished old boy of the school, who later became a commissioner of Education in the State.

The club plays in the Nigeria Premier League. They were originally known as the Vipers of Benin. They play their home matches at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, which has a capacity of 12,000. They are the current champions of the Federation Cup after defeating Enugu Rangers 1–0 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba on June 21, 2023.

Princess Elizabeth Olowu is a Nigerian sculptor and the daughter of Oba Akenzua II, who was a leader of the Edo people in what is now Benin City, Nigeria. Olowu works in bronze, a traditional material for her people, and is known as the first female bronze caster in Nigeria. Her sculptures have a traditional flow as well as a modern and feminist perspective. She is the aunt of DJ P Tee Money, and her daughter is the artist Peju Layiwola.

Chief Gaius Obaseki CBE was a Nigerian politician who was Vice President of the Action Group in 1951. He was a leader of a group of educated Benin residents and contractors who sought representation and a voice in Benin’s governance. He was conferred with the title Iyase of Benin with the support of educated youths, the taxpayers community and the colonial government who were his previous employers. However, many educated youths who supported his rise in politics became disappointed as a result of the activities of the Reformed Ogboni in Benin which had Obaseki as its master (Oluwo).

Patrick Obahiagbon is a Nigerian politician and legal practitioner. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2007, and served Oredo until his appointment as chief of staff to Governor Adams Oshiomole in 2011. Obahiagbon established a cult-following among many Nigerians for his grammatical caricature when engaged in social and political commentary.

Federal College of Education Technical ,Ekiadolor (FCET) is a defunct government owned College of Education located in Edo State, Southern part of Nigeria. The Institution was established in 1980 under the administration of Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli of the defunct Bendel State. The College was one of the government approved tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The Institution served as a Centre for training of School Teachers in Nigeria. The College of Education awards National Certificates in Education (NCE) to its graduates. NCE is a mandatory requirement for those who want to work as a teacher in a Nigerian school. The College was one of the three tertiary Colleges of Education in Edo State, with the other two being College of Education, Igueben and College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi.

College of Education, Igueben is a state owned government tertiary institution located in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State, Southern part of Nigeria. The institution was established in 1980 by the Governor of the defunct Bendel State, Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli. The college is one of the several government approved tertiary institutions located in Edo Central Senatorial district in Edo State. The institution is accredited by National Universities Commission (NUC). The institution was established with the goal of training educators in Nigeria. Graduates of the institution are awarded the National Certificates in Education (NCE).

Osarhieme Osadolor is a Nigerian professor of history and International studies. He is the author of the collection: Cradle of Ideas, A Compendium of Speeches and Writings of Omo N’Oba Erediauwa of Great Beni and former dean of student affairs at the University of Benin. On May 10, 2021, he was appointed as the acting vice-chancellor of the Ambrose Alli University where he served for 10 months until his removal on February 8, 2022.
