Eid-ul-Milad-un-Nabi or normally called Eid Milad-un-Nabi or Barawafat is a festival of Mawlid celebrated by Sunni Muslims across India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] It is organised on the birth anniversary of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad on the date of 12 Rabi Ul Awwal [6] per Islamic calender. [7] [8] [9] During the festival a procession is also taken in the name of Juloos-e-Muhammadi after the festival of Milad. [10] It is considered as a holiday in whole India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. History

The celebration of Eid Milad Un Nabi is considered to be started in the era of Ottoman Empire. It is only celebrated by the Ahle Sunnat wal jamath now. The other movements in Islam, Ahl-i-Hadith and Deobandi marks it as a Bid’at to celebrate birth of prophet. [16]

Practices

Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi, the founder of revivalist Barelvi movement believed that the Prophet Muhammad is closer to the Mawlid people who celebrates Mawlid on the Birth anniversary of him. It should be celebrated in the surroundings the birth (Zikr-e-Wiladat). He stated that the Barelvi practice is to stand up during the Sermon. [17]

Muhammad Hasan Rizvi is an Indian politician and Barelvi Islamic leader. He had served as the Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Jamshedpur West Assembly constituency since 1990 to 1995 on the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha symbol. He is the chairman of Ruhani Markaz, under Government of Jharkhand and previously the President of Jharkhand Muslim Mahaz. He is known for requesting Chief Minister Hemant Soren for Eid-ul-Milad-Un-Nabi a holiday.

Juloos-e-Muhammadi or Juloos-e-Mohammadi or Mohammadi Juloos is an annual procession and a traditional festival celebrated by Hanafi Sunni Muslims around the World on the Birth Day of Islamic Prophet Muhammad on 12th of Islamic Month Rabiul Awwal commemorating prophet. It is celebrated after the Mawlid Program. The procession calls Slogans like Labbaik Ya Rasul Allah, Sarkar Ki Aamad Marhaba etc. The procession of Kanpur is the largest in Asia.

Sunni Dawate Islami is an Indian Non-governmental and socio-religious organisation which works for sunni muslims of India founded by Muhammad Shakir Ali Noori in 1990. It is headquartered at Mumbai, Maharashtra and other offices abroad. They organise International Sunni Ijtema at Azad Maidan, Mumbai for 2 days. It completed its 20th Annual Conference in 2010 and 30th Annual Conference in 2022. It takes out a great procession of Juloos-e-Muhammadi on the occasion of Eid-ul-Milad-un-Nabi every year.

Tahaffuz Namoos-e-Risalat also known as Tahaffuz Namoos-e-Risalat Action Trust is a separate body of Raza Academy for looking over bad activities on the name of Prophet Muhammad. It was founded with Raza Academy by the Muhammad Saeed Noori.

Sufi Festival is an annual two-days Sufi Music Festival held in Bibi Kamal Dargah, Kako Sharif in the Jehanabad district of Bihar to commemorate the death anniversary of the Sufi Saint Bibi Kamal, daughter of Shahabuddin Peer Jagjot. It is organised by the Dargah Committee and Tourism Department of Government of Bihar.

Saqlain Miyan (1947–2023) was an Indian Sufi scholar belonging to the Barelvi movement of Sunni Islam. He was the Sajjadanasheen of Khanqah-e-Sharafatiya in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. He founded the Shah Saqlain Academy of India.

Urs-e-Noori is a two-day annual festival commemorating the death anniversary of the death of Mufti Azam-e-Hind Mustafa Raza Khan Qadri, younger son of Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi. It is celebrated annually on 13th and 14th of Muharram month per Islamic calender. It is celebrated since 1981 at the Bareilly Sharif Dargah.

Mufti Mohammad Mahmood Ahmed Qadri was the Grand Mufti of Madhya Pradesh. He belonged to the Qadiriyya silsila and was connected with the Barelvi movement of Sunni Islam. His son, Maulana Mohammad Hamid Ahmed Qadri is the Grand Mufti of Madhya Pradesh, from 2018. He issued a fatwa against Muslims who participated in the Narmada Yatra in Madhya Pradesh. He was awarded by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, then Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for his social work in 2011.

Ashfaque Hussain Naeemi was the Grand Mufti of Rajasthan. He belonged to Qadiriyya Silsila of Sufism and a leader of the Barelvi movement of Sunni Islam in Rajasthan. He was the founder of Madrasa Darul Uloom Ishaquiya, Ashfaqiya Institute and Ishaqiya Senior Secondary School in Jodhpur. He was the mureed of Mustafa Raza Khan Qadri and Mukhtar Ashraf. He was succeeded by Sher Muhammad Razvi as the Grand Mufti of Rajasthan. He is buried in Khanqah Ashfaqiya, Chokha, Rajasthan.

Urs-e-Qasmi is a three-day commemorative festival celebrated on the death anniversary of the Syed Shah Abul Qasim Ismail Hasan, a Sufi saint of Qadiriyya Barkaatiya order, it is celebrated at the Khanquah-e-Barkaatiya in Marehra Sharif, Etah district of Uttar Pradesh. Syed Najeeb Haider Noori is the present Sajjadanasheen of the dargah. It is celebrated on 3 Jumada Al' Awwal.

Khanquah-e-Barkaatiya is a Dargah complex in Marehra Sharif, Etah district of Uttar Pradesh. It is named after the Syed Shah Barkatullah, a 16th-century Sufi saint. The Khanquah was built by Nawab Muhammad Bangash Khan, then and first Nawab of Farrukhabad. There are seven shrines of different Sufi saints of Quadri Barkati order. It is one of the top known and visited Qadiriyya order shrines in India.

Urs-e-Hashmati is a two-day annual festival commemorating the death anniversary of Hashmat Ali Khan, a student of Ahmed Raza Khan Barelvi at Dargah-e-Hashmatiya. It is celebrated on 23 and 24 Safar according to the Islamic calender.
