Eirik Suhrke is a Norwegian freelance composer and video game designer known for his video game soundtracks. He has composed for Spelunky , Hotline Miami , and Vlambeer games including Ridiculous Fishing . He has also developed games, being one of the main contributors to UFO 50 .

Career

Suhrke was educated as a sound engineer and taught himself music composition. He primarily works on video games in music and sound design. His compositions for games first began as a hobby in his early teens, for RPG Maker indie games and other projects he found on online forums. [1] In 2006, he began PAUSE, a collaboration with Disasterpeace, that became a netlabel. [2]

Suhrke composed the music and sound on Spelunky (2012). [1] The mid-tempo jazz album was inspired by early 1990s video games [3] and was composed over two years using a 1986 synthesizer, audio software from the early 1990s, and live instrumentation. [2] He also worked on Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fishing and Super Crate Box , and composed a track for Hotline Miami . [1] His soundtrack for Downwell (2015) was later released on vinyl. [4] Earnest Cavalli of Engadget described his work as among "the finest indie gaming soundtracks in recent memory" in 2013. [5] Suhrke is a collaborator on UFO 50 , an anthology of retro-style games. In 2002, he set up the website VGMix, which hosts video game music remixes, and continues to administrate it. His career began to take off over the next few years, resulting in him transitioning jobs into a full-time freelance composer by 2005. Since then he has worked on several big-name projects such as the Shantae series, Contra 4, Red Faction: Guerrilla,DuckTales: Remastered, Shovel Knight, and Crypt of the Necrodancer.

<i>Hotline Miami</i> 2012 video game

Hotline Miami is a 2012 top-down shooter game developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital. In the game, the player takes on the role of an unnamed silent protagonist—dubbed Jacket by fans—while committing massacres against the local Russian mafia. In each level, the player must defeat every enemy through various means, ranging from firearms and melee weapons to more specific methods like knocking enemies out with doors. At the beginning of each level, the player chooses from a variety of masks, which offer unique abilities. Set in Miami in 1989, the game primarily tells its story through cryptic dream cutscenes where masked figures berate Jacket for his actions and foreshadow upcoming events.

Nuclear Throne is a bullet hell roguelike video game developed by Vlambeer. Set in a post-apocalypse, players are tasked with killing enemies by using various weapons and characters' special abilities to progress through levels and eventually reach the titular Nuclear Throne. The game is widely known for its steep difficulty curve and fast-paced gameplay. Early prototypes of the game were distributed through Steam's early access program in 2013. Nuclear Throne was released for Linux, Microsoft Windows, OS X, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita in December 2015, for Nintendo Switch in March 2019, and for Xbox One in September 2021.

Greg Wohlwend is an American independent video game developer and artist whose games include Threes! and Ridiculous Fishing. He originally formed Intuition Games with Iowa State University classmate Mike Boxleiter in 2007 where they worked on Dinowaurs and other small Adobe Flash games. Trained as an artist, Wohlwend worked mainly on the visual assets. As Mikengreg, they released Solipskier, whose success let the two take a more experimental approach with Gasketball, which did not fare as well. At the same time, Wohlwend collaborated with Asher Vollmer to make Puzzlejuice, and with Adam Saltsman to make Hundreds based on Wohlwend's first game design. He later released Threes! with Vollmer in 2014 to critical acclaim. His later games TouchTone and TumbleSeed were also the products of collaborations. Downwell is a 2015 vertically scrolling shooter video game with roguelike elements. It was developed by Ojiro Fumoto and published by Devolver Digital for iOS and Microsoft Windows in October 2015, for Android in January 2016, and for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in May 2016. A Nintendo Switch version was released in January 2019. British studio Red Phantom Games developed the Switch and PlayStation ports.

His portraits are known to be bold and vivid in nature. Åkerblad's wide body of work gained significant attention following the success of the video game Hotline Miami, for which he created the cover art, along with its successor Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. Åkerblad was also the sole artist for other video games, including Kometen and Else Heart.Break . Åkerblad is also widely known for regularly creating the cover art for Bandcamp Weekly, the official podcast of Bandcamp. Åkerblad is also a musician with an extensive discography and created soundtracks for several video games.

An eggplant run is a challenge playthrough of the 2012 roguelike-like platform video game Spelunky HD. Such a playthrough centers on carrying an eggplant item to the final boss of the game, King Yama, and tossing it into his face. This eggplant item was originally added to Spelunky as part of an easter egg pitched by the game's composer Eirik Suhrke, and Spelunky's lead designer Derek Yu decided to give it the additional function of turning King Yama into an inert eggplant monster.

He started making music in 2011 and created chiptune music on his own. He then met game developer and co-founder of former Dutch game studio Vlambeer, Jan Willem Nijman. Kallio collaborated with Nijman to develop and create the music to various titles made by Vlambeer. Kallio then collaborated with Daniel Hagström in 2020 to create the soundtrack to Fall Guys.

Ojiro Fumoto, also known by his pseudonym Moppin, is a Japanese indie game developer. He is best known for developing the games Downwell and Poinpy, as well as his contributions to UFO 50.
