El Monte Mall is an enclosed shopping mall located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is considered the first climate controlled indoor mall on the island. [3]
On August 24, 1967, at a cost of $2 million, being developed by Kenny and Company, El Monte Mall inaugurated to much fanfare. Being the first climate controlled enclosed mall in Puerto Rico, on opening it had 100,000 square feet of retail space and parking for 271 vehicles. It was anchored by a Pueblo Supermarket, and had more than 30 establishments with 44 offices which included places such as Zales Jewelers, B & S Drug discount pharmacy, Banco Crédito & Ahorro Ponceño, Carmen Chirino boutique, Crest Shoes, Dulcería Teen, Elenjul children's wear, Estrella's Modas, Furniture Super Marts, Guys and Dolls sportswear, International Boutique, Sterling House Gift Shop, Van Daalen Brothers Electrical Appliances, Top's Men's Wear, and The Brothers Zito Hairstylists, among others. It also had a restaurant named La Taberna Pub. [4] [5] [6]
In 1967, editors of Urbe, at the time the only publication on architecture in the Caribbean, gave a design award to El Monte Mall for "the best commercial architecture" that year. [7]
On February 26, 1968, a Banco Crédito de Hyde Park inaugurated at the mall. [8]
In May 1970, The Brothers Zito opened a new location at the second level of the mall. It was called a "Wig Center" specializing in such. [9]
In November 1975, the El Monte Mall Tenants Association appealed to the San Juan Superior Court alleging that El Monte Corporation violated the lease agreement with its tenants by establishing paid parking, when it had promised to provide it for free. The El Monte Mall Tenants Association requested that the court issue a permanent injunction addressed to the defendants, El Monte Corporation, Interstate General Corporation and Aparcadores Nativos, Inc., ordering them to refrain from limiting, restricting or impeding in any way, to the plaintiffs and their customers and guests, free access to the parking facilities located on the first floor of the mall building. The plaintiffs considered that the imminent action that the defendant contemplated to carry out constituted a flagrant violation of the current lease agreements they had and would cause immediate and irreparable damage to all the plaintiffs and to all those who are affected as tenants and clients or sponsors from the mall. According to the lawsuit, on October 17, the co-defendant Interstate General Corporation, as agent of the El Monte Corporation, sent a letter to all tenants of the El Monte Mall, informing them that as of November 1, 1975, Aparcadores Nativos, Inc. would be in charge of the parking facilities. In December 1978, the mall housed a Field's Department Store specializing in women's undergarments. [11]
On May 25, 2016, at a cost of $6 million, Pueblo Supermarkets re-opened a new store at the mall. The store was originally situated in the mall's ground floor and moved to the second floor counting with 34,000 square feet. [12] [13]
In October 2016, a Planet Fitness opened at the mall. [14]
Pueblo is a Puerto Rican supermarkets chain. It has been one of Puerto Rico's major supermarket chains since 1955.
Plaza Las Américas is a shopping mall in Hato Rey, San Juan, Puerto Rico, located at the intersection of Routes 18 and 22. "Plaza", as it is known to many Puerto Ricans, was the first indoor shopping mall built in Puerto Rico. It is the largest shopping mall in the Caribbean and the second largest in Latin America. Río Piedras is a populous district of San Juan, and former town and municipality of Puerto Rico, which was merged with the municipality of San Juan in 1951. The historic town was founded in 1714 as El Roble, it was given municipality rights in 1823, and since 1903 it has been the home of the University of Puerto Rico's main campus, earning the popular name of Ciudad Universitaria today. Plaza del Caribe is an enclosed shopping mall located in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It is owned by Empresas Fonalledas, and is the largest mall in southern Puerto Rico. The mall is located at the intersection of Puerto Rico Highway 2 and Highway 12. The anchor stores are JCPenney and Macy's. A former third anchor store, Sears, closed in February 2020.
Plaza Carolina is an enclosed shopping mall located in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Anchored by JCPenney, TJ Maxx, Caribbean Cinemas, Burlington Forever 21, Chili's Grill & Bar, and Supermercados Econo it features 161 stores, making it the second largest mall in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. The mall has a food court in its second floor and several offices in its third floor.
San Patricio Plaza is a 640,000 square feet (59,000 m2) three-level enclosed shopping mall located in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The mall is located at the intersection of PR-2, PR-23, and PR-20, and has over 120 stores with its anchors being T.J. Maxx, Capri, Walgreens, PetSmart, Caribbean Cinemas and Office Depot, with two vacant anchor spots last occupied by Kmart and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
Santa Rosa Mall is a shopping mall in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. It is on Puerto Rico Highway 2 and is near the Deportivo station of Tren Urbano. The mall is owned by Commercial Centers Management and has an area of 503,610 square feet (46,787 m2). The mall is anchored by Burlington Coat Factory and IKEA. Burlington Coat Factory was previously Supermercados Grande, and a González Padín.

It is currently anchored by an Outlet China; a discount store, a Grand Way; a department store, and an Advance Auto Parts. It is also home to a Farmacias Caridad; a pharmacy. It was formerly also anchored by a Fallas Discount Stores which closed in 2020, the space remaining vacant.
Pitusa was a chain of department stores operating in Puerto Rico. It was one of the largest Puerto Rican store companies and a competitor of another chain on the island, Topeka.
Centro del Sur Mall is a shopping mall in Ponce, Puerto Rico. At the time of its inauguration in 1962, it was Puerto Rico's largest mall and “the most modern mall in the Caribbean.” It is located at the intersection of Puerto Rico routes PR-163 and PR-1. Its original building cost was $2,500,000. It has been enlarged several times; including in 1991, in 2005, and again in 2010; this last time to accommodate the megastore Burlington.
Plaza de Diego Mall was an enclosed shopping mall formerly located in the Paseo de Diego area of Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. At its peak it had 40+ establishments, and was anchored by a Goody’s Department Store. Being closed by 2014, it would be demolished in 2020, then redeveloped and turned into a housing project named De Diego Village which would officially inaugurate in 2023.
Arecibo Mall was an enclosed shopping mall formerly located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. At its peak it had 30+ establishments, and was anchored by a Gonzalez Padín department store and a Sears. It is now occupied by government offices.
González Padín was a high-end department store based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The chain which operated in Puerto Rico at its peak had 10 stores. The chain closed in 1995, and at the time of closure it was the biggest and oldest department store on the island.
Es de Velasco or mostly just known as "Velasco" was a chain of high-end department stores operating in Puerto Rico. The chain was later bought out by its main competitor González Padín in 1991 and closed in 1995.

El Cantón Mall is an enclosed shopping mall in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. It houses stores such as Rent-A-Center, Rainbow, Grand Way, Donato, All Ways 99, Claro, T-Mobile, La Gloría, Me Salvé, and many others. It was formerly anchored by a Tiendas Capri which left the mall in 2017, later being replaced with government offices.
Sears Roebuck de Puerto Rico, Inc., or just Sears de Puerto Rico, was founded in 1961, as a subsidiary to the main Sears Roebuck and Company. It would serve to operate Sears stores in Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The company's line of business includes the retail sale of general lines of apparel such as suits, coats, dresses, and home furnishings. Sears Roebuck and Company established itself in Puerto Rico in 1937, opening a catalogue store that year. At its peak, Sears had 10+ locations on the island. As of October 2023, one Sears store remains open on the island at the Plaza Las Américas shopping mall.

Anchor stores for the mall is a Tiendas Capri and a Grand Stores, other main stores in the mall consists of All Ways 99, Me Salve, Rainbow, Exentrix, La Nueva Era, and others. It was formerly anchored by a Kmart store which was announced to close in November 2019.
