El Shams is an Egyptian football club based in Cairo, Egypt. They are currently a member of Egyptian First Division. Last season (Egyptian Third Division 2015-16), they finished in 1st place, but lost in playoffs.

Despite its position in the Egyptian Frist Division, El Shams club has one of the most successful Egyptian Youth academies, generating a big number of successful athletes and champions.

History

The club was founded in May 1962 as sports social club and was called the Heliopolis Sporting Club (El Shams), based in the northern section of Cairo Governorate.

As of 2010, El Shams football team participated only once in the Egyptian Premier League and that was in 1997–98. The team won 5, draw 9, and lost 16 matches earning the 16th place (last place). [1] As a result, the team was relegated to the Egyptian Premier B.

The Egyptian Premier League is an Egyptian professional league for Egyptian football clubs and represents the top flight of Egyptian football. The championship consists of eighteen competing teams in a home and away league system. It is currently known as the Presentation Egyptian Premier League, after the advertising company signed a sponsorship deal with the Egyptian Football Association. The league's highest attendance is 120,000.

The Egyptian Second Division is an Egyptian professional football league representing the second division of Egyptian football, which was established in 1977. The championship consists of three groups; each group contains sixteen teams competing in a home and away league system, with the first-placed team in each group being promoted to the Egyptian Premier League. No more than three foreign players are allowed on any side in the Egyptian Second Division. The current structure of the competition was first implemented in 2007-08 season.
