The school colors are navy and white. The Blue Devils compete in GHSA Region 8-A. The school's operation hours are 7:55 am–2:55 pm.

South High School is a public high school located on the south side of Columbus, Ohio. It was opened in 1900 as the fourth Columbus City Schools high school at 345 Deshler Avenue. The current building was opened March 31, 1924. The Charles S. Barrett Building at 345 E. Deshler Ave opened September 1900. Prior to that in 1895-1897 South High School utilized part of the Ohio Avenue Elementary School. In 1897 it was decided that the building was too far east for its name; the south side students were returned to the Central High School building at 6th & Broad Streets, and the building process began on the Deshler Street Building. It was known as South Urban Academy for a short time. The school is located at 1160 Ann Street.
Clark Daniel Gaines is an American former professional football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL). He was also a coach in the United States Football League (USFL). He played for the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs over the course of his seven-year NFL career. Gaines was the running backs and special teams coach for the New Jersey Generals of the USFL.
Elbert J. Drungo Jr. was an American football offensive lineman for one season in the American Football League (AFL) for the Houston Oilers, then seven more seasons with the Oilers in the National Football League (NFL). He finished his career with the Buffalo Bills. Drungo played college football at Tennessee State University 4. He died of cancer in Nashville, TN 2014.

The school provides secondary education for students in grades 9 through 12. Elbert Crawford was an American professional football offensive lineman who played two seasons with the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the eighth round of the 1990 NFL draft after playing college football at Arkansas. He was also a member of the Denver Broncos.
Carey Mecole Hardman Jr. is an American professional football wide receiver and return specialist for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs and was selected by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft. He has won Super Bowl LIV, Super Bowl LVII, and Super Bowl LVIII with the Chiefs. In Super Bowl LVIII, Hardman scored the game-winning walk-off touchdown in overtime. Hardman has also briefly played for the New York Jets.
