Eleanor Jordan (born May 18,1953) is an American politician who served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1996 to 2001 before becoming the Executive Director of the Kentucky Commission on Women. [1] [2] [3]
Jordan won a special election for her House seat in February 1996 and won the general election in November,as well as re-election in 1998. [1] In 2000,she ran for Kentucky's Third Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives but lost against the incumbent,though she "raised more than $1.7 million,engaged scores of volunteers,and attracted national attention," including endorsements from President Bill Clinton,New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley,former Texas Governor Ann Richards,and 35 members of Congress,who traveled to Louisville to make the endorsements. [4] She was the state's first black candidate for Congress or any national office. [1]
In 2001,Governor Paul E. Patton appointed her executive director of the Office of the Ombudsman for the Cabinet for Families and Children. [4]
During the 2000s,Jordan began caucusing with other female legislators,including Joni Jenkins,Susan Johns,Ruth Ann Palumbo,Mary Lou Marzian,and Kathy Stein,in order to track legislation in their individual fields of expertise and work together to affect legislation more easily than they could have done alone. One early victory involved "building statewide opposition to a bill that,before their organized effort,likely would have gone unnoticed and passed easily,[...] removing the requirement that educational institutions offer women's softball as well as men's baseball,violating the spirit if not the letter of Title IX." Jordan was born in Louisville,Kentucky,on May 18,1953. She attended the University of Kentucky and Western Kentucky University. She is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and the NAACP,and she has worked with the Council of State Governments and various organizations related to child care,education,libraries,and churches. Anne Meagher Northup is an American Republican politician and educator from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. From 1997 to 2007,she represented the Louisville-centered 3rd congressional district of Kentucky in the United States House of Representatives,where she served on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. She lost reelection to Democrat John Yarmuth in the 2006 election. She then ran for Governor of Kentucky,losing by 15 points to embattled governor Ernie Fletcher in the Republican primary election for the 2007 Kentucky gubernatorial election. Prior to her election to the United States House of Representatives,Northup had served in the Kentucky House of Representatives. Northup ran again for her old congressional seat in the 2008 election,losing again to Yarmuth.
Edward Thompson Breathitt Jr. was an American politician from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. A member of one of the state's political families,he was the 51st Governor of Kentucky,serving from 1963 to 1967. After serving in World War II and graduating from the University of Kentucky,Breathitt worked on the presidential campaign of Adlai Stevenson,the senatorial campaign of Alben Barkley,and the gubernatorial campaign of Bert T. Combs. When Combs won the governorship in 1959,he appointed Breathitt as personnel commissioner,where he wrote legislation establishing the first merit system for state employees. He continued to hold appointive offices throughout Combs' tenure,and in 1962,Combs endorsed Breathitt to succeed him as governor.
James Bennett McCreary was an American lawyer and politician from Kentucky. He represented the state in both houses of the U.S. Congress and served as its 27th and 37th governor. Shortly after graduating from law school,he was commissioned as the only major in the 11th Kentucky Cavalry,serving under Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan during the American Civil War. He returned to his legal practice after the war. In 1869,he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives where he served until 1875;he was twice chosen Speaker of the House. At their 1875 nominating convention,state Democrats chose McCreary as their nominee for governor,and he won an easy victory over Republican John Marshall Harlan. With the state still feeling the effects of the Panic of 1873,most of McCreary's actions as governor were aimed at easing the plight of the state's poor farmers.
