Elham Afkari is an Iranian activist and the sister of Navid Afkari. During the Mahsa Amini protests, on November 10, 2022, she was arrested along with her husband and their three-year-old daughter and was transferred to Detention Center No. 100 in Shiraz. She was later released. [1] [2] [3]

Arrests in 2021

On June 12, 2021, Elham Afkari, along with other family members and acquaintances, protested against the 280-day solitary confinement of her two brothers, Habib and Vahid, in front of Adel-Abad Prison. Plainclothes officers allegedly assaulted them and confiscated their phones. That same day, Elham and her husband's sister were arrested but released after a few hours. [4] [3]

Later, on September 13, 2022, coinciding with the second anniversary of Navid Afkari’s execution, Elham, Habib Afkari, and Habib’s wife were arrested at a police checkpoint in Shiraz while en route to Navid Afkari’s grave. They were released after the ceremony. Reports indicate that both Elham and Habib Afkari resisted arrest. [4] [5]

2022 Arrest

On November 10, 2022, Elham Afkari, her husband, and their three-year-old daughter were arrested. According to government-affiliated media, she was detained and charged with allegedly collaborating with Iran International. The Afkari family released a statement denying any cooperation between Elham and foreign media, while acknowledging her opposition to the Islamic Republic. [6]

Mizan News Agency published an image of Elham Afkari blindfolded while in detention, an action that reportedly violated Iranian laws prohibiting the publication of an accused individual’s image before a conviction. [6]

Although government-affiliated media initially reported that she was arrested at the Iranian border, Fars News Agency later stated that she was actually detained in Shiraz. [6]

Saeed Afkari stated on Twitter that Elham’s husband and child, who were also detained, were released after several hours. He later tweeted that Elham was denied contact with anyone and was unaware of whether her child had been released. [7]

The following day, images surfaced showing her mother, Behiye Namjoo, outside the Shiraz Intelligence Office, expressing distress and demanding her daughter’s release. In a widely shared video, she can be seen knocking on the office door, saying, "I will tear this door down." [8]

Reports indicated that Elham Afkari began a hunger strike following her arrest. Another Afkari family member, Hamid Afkari, was also arrested outside the Shiraz Intelligence Detention Center while protesting her detention. [9]

He was sentenced to death twice by the chairman of the 15th Chamber of the Islamic Revolutionary Court, Judge Abolqassem Salavati, in 2011 and 2012, without participating in the court proceedings and without the freedom to choose his own lawyer. International human rights organizations are following Asghari’s case as he remains in custody.

Though there were interruptions of the Iran's bandwidth during the hashtag's lifespan, it managed to pass 8 million mentions by the dawn of July 15, 2020. It is also worth noting that since Twitter is blocked by the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology of Iran, almost all of the twitter users from Iran need to use a VPN; thus the location of the tweets that are sent from Iran are disguised as the destination location of their chosen VPN service. The hashtag resurged in popularity after the death of wrestler Navid Afkari, who was believed to have been pressured to confess to murder.

Navid Afkari Sangari was an Iranian wrestler who was sentenced to death and executed in Shiraz after having been accused and convicted of murdering a security guard during the 2018 Iranian protests; sources from outside Iran also cited convictions on other charges related to Afkari's participation in the protests, while Iranian sources denied that the case had any connection to the protests. Afkari had filed a complaint with the Iranian judiciary, and stated in an audiotape recording that was smuggled from prison, that his initial confession had been obtained under torture; the Iranian judiciary denied the torture claims, and Iranian state media broadcast a recording of the confession. Following rushed trials that were widely criticized by human rights organizations, the Islamic Republic has executed eight protestors, Mohsen Shekari, Majidreza Rahnavard, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini, Saleh Mirhashemi, Majid Kazemi, Saeed Yaghoobi and Mohammad Ghobadloo. Dozens of protesters have been charged with offenses that are punishable by death in Iran.

Pezhman Fatehi was a Kurdish political prisoner. He died after being sentenced to a capital punishment sentence at Qezelhesar prison, where he was incarcerated. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that they apprehended him and three other individuals – Mohsen Mazloum, Vafa Azarbar, and Mohammad Faramarzi – in the Sumar and Baradost regions of Urmia province. Noor News, the official statement outlet of the Supreme National Security Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the statement of the security police forces on July 23, 2023, published two contradictory reports on the arrest of a team linked to Israel's intelligence agency, Mossad, but offered no further specifics about the identities of the detainees. Additionally, the Iranian authorities announced to have arrested ten people in Urmia province. In a prior statement issued in June 2023, the Ministry reported the dismantling of a terrorist cell in Isfahan with ties to Israel's Mossad intelligence agency. Subsequent investigations revealed the detainees of the Urmia province to be members of the Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan, allegedly plotting an attack in Isfahan. In addition to the four prisoners mentioned earlier, Reza Rasaei and Mujahid Koorkouri are also in danger of being executed.

Detention Center No. 100 is a secret, unofficial detention facility in Shiraz, operating under the supervision of Iran's Ministry of Intelligence. It is located near Adelabad Prison.
