Aluf Eli Sharvit is a general in the Israel Defense Forces who served as the Commander of the Israeli Navy between 2016 and 2021.
Sharvit was born on kibbutz Sde Boker and grew up in Beersheba. He was one of three children born to Yosef and Esther Sharvit,Moroccan Jewish immigrants to Israel. He attended the Makif Alef school in Beersheba. He is married to Eti and the father of three children. Sharvit was conscripted into the Israel Defense Forces in 1985 and joined the Israeli Navy. He remained in the navy as an officer after his mandatory service. Sharvit served in numerous positions and later headed the navy's missile boat fleet in 2009. Sharvit then served as the commander of the Haifa naval base,taking over command from then-base commander Ram Rothberg,from 2011 to 2014. From 2014 onwards until his appointment as Commander,he served as the Chief of staff for the Israeli Navy. [1] [2] [3]
On September 12,2016,Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman approved his appointment as the next head of the Israeli Navy,after being nominated by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot. [1] [4] [5] He is to be promoted in rank to Major General (Aluf). He replaced Vice-Admiral Ram Rothberg,who served as the Commander of the Israeli Navy for five years. [3] He officially entered his role as the Commander of the Israeli Navy at a ceremony in Tel Aviv.
Aluf is a senior military rank in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) for officers who in other countries would have the rank of general, air marshal, or admiral. In addition to the aluf rank, four other ranks are derivatives of the word, together, constituting the five highest ranks in the IDF.

Gadi Eisenkot, also spelt Eizenkot, is an Israeli general and politician from the Israeli National Unity party. He served as the 21st Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces from 2015 to 2019 and as of 2023, serves as a minister without portfolio in Israel's government. Eisenkot, who grew up in Eilat, pursued maritime studies and later served in the IDF's Golani Brigade. He holds a B.A. in History from Tel Aviv University and a post-graduate degree in Political Science from Haifa University. Married with five children, he resides in Herzliya. One of his sons, Gal was killed in action during the 2023 Israel-Hamas war.
Aluf Dan Harel is a retired general in the Israel Defense Forces and a former Deputy Chief of the General Staff. Harel served as the Director General of the Ministry of Defense from 2013 to 2016.

The 89th "Oz" Brigade is a brigade of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), dedicated entirely to special operations. It was established in December 2015. The new brigade, dubbed the Commando Brigade, is composed solely of infantry special-operations units removed from their previous chain of command structures to create a new tactical formation.
