Eli Valley is an American cartoonist and author. He is best known for his political cartoons, which often feature prominent politicians, businesspeople, and media personalities.
Valley was born in Rhode Island, and grew up Troy, New York, and New Jersey. His father was a Conservative rabbi, while his mother was secular. Valley has one sister. He attended Jewish day school until 8th grade, and received an undergraduate degree in English from Cornell University. [1] [2] [3] While at Cornell, Valley contributed cartoons to The Cornell Daily Sun , the student newspaper. [3]
Valley published a travel book, The Great Jewish Cities of Central and Eastern Europe: A Travel Guide and Resource Book to Prague, Warsaw, Crakow, and Budapest (1999, Jason Aronson). [4]
Valley was artist-in-residence at The Forward from 2011 to 2013. [5]
In October 2013, after Valley satirized Abraham Foxman as an antisemite for his antagonism toward anti-Zionist Jews, [6] Foxman pressured the newspaper to stop publishing Valley's work. [7] [8] [9]
In 2017, Valley published Diaspora Boy: Comics on Crisis in America and Israel (2017, OR Books), [10] a collection of comics and essays exploring American Jewish identity and the relationship of American Jews with Israel. [11] In The Los Angeles Review of Books, Nathan Goldman wrote, "The book is not only a towering artistic achievement and a disturbing chronicle of American Jewry’s relationship to Israel over the last 10 years, but also a battle cry for a resurgent American Jewish left in a harrowing time of far-right power in the United States and Israel."
Writing in Vulture , Abraham Riesman has referred to Valley's work as "expressionist [and] woodcut-esque." [12]
Valley contributed illustrations to The Chapo Guide to Revolution . [13] Writing in The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette , Will Tomer said the book resembled "an old-school MAD Magazine, thanks in part to the stomach-turning illustrations of Eli Valley." [14]
Valley's "Schlonged!," about Donald Trump's obsession with size, was selected for The Best American Comics 2017. [15]
In March 2019, Valley drew a cartoon satirizing Meghan McCain's appropriation of Jewish identity [16] [17] after McCain wept while castigating Ilhan Omar as an antisemite for her remarks about Israel on "The View." [18] [19] [20] McCain called the cartoon "one of the most anti-semitic things I've ever seen," [21] which caused controversy [22] and discussion about Christian Zionist allegations of antisemitism. [23] [24]
Antisemitism or Jew-hatred is hostility to, prejudice towards, or discrimination against, Jews. This sentiment is a form of racism, and a person who harbours it is called an antisemite. Primarily, antisemitic tendencies may be motivated by negative sentiment towards Jews as a people or by negative sentiment towards Jews with regard to Judaism. In the former case, usually presented as racial antisemitism, a person's hostility is driven by the belief that Jews constitute a distinct race with inherent traits or characteristics that are repulsive or inferior to the preferred traits or characteristics within that person's society. In the latter case, known as religious antisemitism, a person's hostility is driven by their religion's perception of Jews and Judaism, typically encompassing doctrines of supersession that expect or demand Jews to turn away from Judaism and submit to the religion presenting itself as Judaism's successor faith—this is a common theme within the other Abrahamic religions. The development of racial and religious antisemitism has historically been encouraged by the concept of anti-Judaism, which is distinct from antisemitism itself.
Itzhak Avraham ben Zeev Spiegelman, professionally known as Art Spiegelman, is an American cartoonist, editor, and comics advocate best known for his graphic novel Maus. His work as co-editor on the comics magazines Arcade and Raw has been influential, and from 1992 he spent a decade as contributing artist for The New Yorker. He is married to designer and editor Françoise Mouly and is the father of writer Nadja Spiegelman. In September 2022, the National Book Foundation announced that he would receive the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

Benjamin R. Garrison is an American alt-right political cartoonist and artist. Several of Garrison's cartoons have been controversial. Various critics in the media have called him sexist, racist, anti-feminist, xenophobic, anti-government, and conspiratorial. Garrison has also been accused of antisemitism by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). His cartoons often lionize American conservative figures and politicians, such as former and current President-elect Donald Trump and Rand Paul and often express favorable views of Trumpism and its political positions, and demonize liberal, moderate, and Never Trump movement figures such as President Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton. Some alt-right activists and Internet trolls have edited Garrison's comics to incorporate further offensive content, including the antisemitic "Happy Merchant" caricature.

Zionist antisemitism or antisemitic Zionism refers to a phenomenon in which antisemites express support for Zionism and the State of Israel. In some cases, this support may be promoted for explicitly antisemitic reasons. Historically, this type of antisemitism has been most notable among Christian Zionists, who may perpetrate religious antisemitism while being outspoken in their support for Jewish sovereignty in Israel due to their interpretation of Christian eschatology. Similarly, people who identify with the political far-right, particularly in Europe and the United States, may support the Zionist movement because they seek to expel Jews from their country and see Zionism as the least complicated method of achieving this goal and satisfying their racial antisemitism.
