Elizabeth Tartakovsky (born May 24, 2000) is an American right-handed saber fencer. [1] She qualified to represent the United States at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [2]

Personal life

Tartakovsky's great uncle is Olympic fencer Yury Gelman, and her sister Gabrielle fenced for Harvard. [3] Before fencing, she was a ballet skater. Tartakovsky speaks English, Russian, and Spanish. [1]

She graduated Livingston High School in 2018 [4] and graduated Harvard University in 2023. [5]

Career

In 2017, Tartakovsky was the bronze medalist in the World Cadets Fencing Championship. [6] Tartakovksy was the Individual Ivy League Champion [5] and bronze medalist at the NCAA Championships in the sabre in 2019. [7] [5] She tied for bronze at the 2022 US Nationals in the sabre. [8] She was the women's sabre NCAA National Champion in 2022 [9] and the silver medalist in 2023. [10] At the 2023 Pan American Fencing Championship, she tied for third. [11] At the 2024 Coupe de Monde, she again took third.

Tartakovksy was selected to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the individual and team sabre events. [12]

Mariel Leigh Zagunis is an American sabre fencer. She is a two-time Olympic champion in the individual sabre and the first American to win a gold medal in Olympic fencing. She was Team USA flag bearer in the 2012 Summer Olympics Parade of Nations. She has two Olympic bronze team medals and is a five-time Olympian.

Rebecca Ward is an American sabre fencer. She won the gold medal at the sabre 2006 World Fencing Championships after beating Mariel Zagunis 15–11 in the final, and took bronze in both individual and team sabre events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She also won the women's NCAA national individual sabre championship three times, the first in history to do so in sabre. In 2015, she was inducted into the USA Fencing Hall of Fame.

Ivan James Lee is an American Olympic sabre fencer and coach. He was a two-time NCAA Men's Sabre Champion, a five-time national sabre champion, and was inducted into the US Fencing Association Hall of Fame. He worked as a police officer in the New York City Police Department from 2008 until 2022, and as the Women's Fencing Team Head Coach at Long Island University from 2019 until December 2023. Lee was elected Chair of the board of directors of USA Fencing in September 2023. He was suspended by USA Fencing in December 2023, for his alleged conduct that would constitute a violation of the U.S. Center for SafeSport (SafeSport) Code. Lee resigned when he was informed of his suspension. His suspension was upheld by SafeSport on January 4, 2024, lifted by SafeSport on January 16 while it continued its investigation of Lee’s conduct, and then reimposed by SafeSport in February 2024. In February 2024 Lee was arrested on charges of forcible touching, sexual abuse, and harassment.

Nick Itkin is an American right-handed foil fencer. Itkin is a two-time individual NCAA champion, 2024 Individual Pan American Games Gold medalist, 2023 Team Pan American Games Gold medalist, two-time individual World Championship medalist, and 2021 team Olympic bronze medalist. Itkin took foil silver at the 2023 World Fencing Championships to become the first U.S. man, and third U.S. fencer overall, to win an individual medal at back-to-back World Championships.

The Ukrainian Fencing Federation commonly known by the acronym NFFU, established in 1992, is the governing body of Ukrainian fencing. Through 2022, Ukrainian fencers won 230 medals combined in the Olympic Games, World championships, and European championships.

The fencing competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are scheduled to run from 27 July to 4 August at the Grand Palais strip. A total of 212 fencers, with an equal distribution between men and women, will compete across twelve medal events at the Games. For the second straight time, Paris 2024 will witness both men and women fence against each other in the individual and team events held in all three weapons.
