Elvis Banyihwabe (born 15 April 1983) is a former Burundian international footballer who played twice for the Burundi national team, as a midfielder.

Club career

Born in the Burundian capital of Bujumbura, [1] Banyihwabe fled to the Netherlands in 2001 as a result of the Burundian Civil War. [2] During his time in the Netherlands, Banyihwabe played for BV Veendam, [3] VV Berkum, DOS Kampen and Be Quick '28. [4] [5]

Following his time in Dutch football, Banyihwabe moved to England, playing for Bootle, Prescot Cables, [1] Ashton Athletic, [6] Congleton Town and AFC Liverpool. [1]

International career

On 25 March 2007, Banyihwabe made his debut for Burundi in a 1–0 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualification loss against Botswana. [7]

The team has never qualified for the World Cup. Burundi previously did come very close to qualifying for the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, losing only on penalties to Guinea in a playoff. However, in 2019, it qualified for the first time, and took part in the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Group B, but lost all its matches and left from the group stage without scoring a single goal.

Sportclub Veendam was a Dutch professional association football club based in Veendam, province of Groningen. Founded on 4 September 1894 as Look-Out, it became P.J. Veendam in 1909, Veendam in 1910, SC Veendam in 1974, BV Veendam in 1997 and again SC Veendam in 2011. The club was a founder member of the regional first tier Eerste Klasse Noord in 1916 and became champions of the division in 1931–32; it qualified for the national championship play-offs but finished in bottom place.
