Emily Claire Bugeja (born 30 April, 1999) is a Canadian kitefoiler who was sixth in the Pan American Games in 2023. She was nominated to compete for Canada at the 2024 Olympics.

Life

Bugeja was born in North Vancouver in 1999. [1] By the age of eight she was beginning her commitment to sailing on an Optimist dinghy. [2] In 2016 she went to New Zealand to sail at the 2016 Youth Worlds. In 2017 she was competing in the 29er class dinghy at the 2017 Canada Games where she won a bronze medal. [2]

Bugeja took up Formula Kite and three years later she was in Santiago in 2023 when she came sixth in the Pan American Games that was held in Chile. She was also the highest placed Canadian at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia regatta. This result meant that Canada had a reserved place for Formula Kite at the 2024 Olympics. [1] Only one athlete is allowed from any one country and Canada's place went to Bugeja as she had scored slightly more highly that her rival kite foiler Marie-Ève Mayrand. [3]

She studied Electrical Engineering in Ontario at Queen's University at Kingston where her interest was in robotics. [2]

The places to join the first Olympic Formula Foil competition at the 2024 Olympics were highly valued. The "last chance" contest (French Olympic Week) was held in Hyères in April 2024 when the last five Olympic places were the prizes for kitefoilers. By this time the chosen competitors representing different continents included not only Bugeja, but Justina Kitchen from New Zealand, Fawn Jantawan from Thailand, Catalina Turienzo from Argentina, Julie Paturau from Mauritius and the Spaniard Gisela Pulido. [4] She was 40th in the overall standings [5] at the 2024 Formula Kite World Championships at Hyères in May 2024. [6] She was chosen to be Canada's athlete joining five others identified for Canada's sailing team over Nataliya Leshko and Martyna Dakowicz. [7] In June 2024, Bugeja was named to Canada's 2024 Olympic team. [8] [9]

He is the reigning Formula Kite World, Asian and European champion and holds the distinction of being the youngest winner in any Olympic sailing class competition, achieving this remarkable feat at the age of 16. He competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the inaugural men's formula kite event, where he reached the finals and won the bronze medal. Maeder is also a three-time Formula Kite youth world champion in consecutive years from 2021 to 2023 and won various open championships across Europe, Asia and Pan America.

Poema Newland is a French sailor and kitefoiler. She was the European Formula Kite champion in 2021.

Breiana Whitehead is an Olympic kitesurfer from Australia. She was the first athlete selected for the Australian team for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Derin Atakan is a Turkish female kitesurfer competing in the Formula Kite class. She qualified to participate at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

Daniela Moroz is an American sailor who became the World champion at Formula Kite six times between 2016 and 2022.

Maggie Eillen Pescetto is an Italian Formula Kite sailor who took the silver position at the Kite Open Africa and Middle East Championship in 2022. She was nominated for Olympic competition at formula kite in 2024.

Gal Zukerman is an Israeli kite foiler. She won the Youth Sailing World Championships in 2022. Zukerman is competing for Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the Women's Formula Kite in Marseille, France, between 4–8 August 2024.

(María) Catalina "Cata" Turienzo is an Argentine kitesurfer who took silver at the 2023 Pan American Games and a place in the 2024 Olympic Games. She was the 2024 Formula Kite Youth World Champion.

Justina Kitchen is a New Zealand Olympic kitefoiler.

Elena Lengwiler born Elena Bosshard is a Swiss Ice Hockey player and a nominated kitefoiler for the 24 Olympics. She was fourth in the 2024 European championships and she represents Switzerland in Formula Kite at the 2024 Olympics.

Mafalda Pires de Lima is a Portuguese kitefoiler. She has been sailing since the age of ten and when it was agreed that Formula Kite was to be an Olympic sport then she began to enjoy the difficult sport. She was Portugal's first woman kitesurfing champion.

Ariane Imbert is a kite foiler who was the French champion five times and on two occasions she was nearly the World champion. She became the French National Coach.
