Emily Hangstefer (born 26 October 1989) is an American deaf tennis player. She has competed at the 2013 Summer Deaflympics which was held in Sofia, Bulgaria. [1]
Hangstefer is the youngest of six children who grew up among a tennis playing family in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. She and her two elder brothers, Jim and Daniel, were born deaf. Emily has had 58-decibel hearing loss in both ears since childhood. She graduated from the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. [2] During her youth she used to play tennis with her elder brother, Daniel. [3]
In 2014, Hangstefer became the first tennis player to win the USA Deaf Sports Federation's Sportswoman of the Year award. [4] [5]
At the 2013 Summer Deaflympics, she won the women's doubles title along with fellow emerging American deaf tennis player, Laura Chapman. They defeated the second seeded Chinese deaf tennis players, Ho Chiu-mei and Hsiu-Hsiang Ho in straight sets (6–4, 6–1). [6] [4] [7]
Hangstefer partnered with her elder brother, Daniel, who is also a tennis coach in mixed doubles, and secured the silver medal in the event. [8] [9]

The First International Silent Games, or First International Games for the Deaf, now referred to retroactively as the 1924 Summer Deaflympics, were the inaugural edition of the Deaflympics. The Games were held in Paris, France, from 10 to 17 August 1924, as an equivalent to the Olympic Games for deaf athletes. They were organised on the initiative of deaf Frenchman Eugène Rubens-Alcais, who, just after the Games, co-founded the Comité International des Sports des Sourds with other "deaf sporting leaders". The 1924 Games were "the first games ever" for athletes with a disability, preceding the World Wheelchair and Amputee Games in 1948, which became the Paralympic Games in 1960 but which did not include events for deaf athletes.
Gábor Máthé is a Hungarian male tennis player, who competes in the men's single and double during his career. His team is Tatár Tennis Club in Debrecen, Hungary. He is best known for winning the men's single tennis final on August 2 at the 2013 Summer Deaflympics in Sofia, Bulgaria, with a three set victory over Mikaël Laurent from France.

She also clinched a bronze medal in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay event in the 2009 Summer Deaflympics.

Matthew James Klotz is an American male deaf swimmer and reality television contestant. He has represented the United States at the Deaflympics and in other international events including the Deaf World Championships. He is a world record holder in swimming for deaf and is considered one of the finest deaf swimmers to represent USA after the retirements of Marcus Titus and Reed Gershwind. He made his Deaflympic debut at the 2013 Summer Deaflympics.
Vidisha Baliyan is a former beauty pageant titleholder, retired tennis player, motivational speaker, and founder of the Spandan Welfare Society. She represented India at the 2017 Summer Deaflympics and also represented India at the 2019 Miss & Mister Deaf World contest. On 19 July 2019, she won the Miss Deaf World Contest and became the first ever Indian to be crowned as a Miss Deaf World.
The United States competed at the 2019 Winter Deaflympics which was held in Valtellina and Valchiavenna, Italy, from December 12 to 21, 2019. The United States was one of the 34 nations to compete at the multi-sport event. This was the nation's 12th appearance at the Winter Deaflympics, having regularly participated at the event since making its debut in 1967. 42 athletes represented the United States at the Deaflympics in all six sporting events including chess, cross-country skiing, curling, ice hockey, alpine skiing, and snowboarding.
