Emmanuel Mallia is a Maltese politician. He was the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security of the Republic of Malta. Following an alleged "cover-up" within his ministry, [1] he was removed from office by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat on 9 December 2014 and replaced by Carmelo Abela. [2] In 2016,Mallia returned to the cabinet as Minister for Competitiveness and Digital,Maritime and Services Economy,a portfolio which he retained until the 2017 general election. [3] Mallia remained an MP in the Maltese Parliament until 2021,when he resigned to become Malta's UK High Commissioner. [4]
Mallia was born in Sliema,Malta,the youngest child in a family of five. His father died when he was almost 16 years old. Mallia lived in Gżira,Malta for many years.
Mallia attended St Elizabeth School,Sliema,then the Sliema and Gżira primary schools. Following his secondary education at Naxxar Secondary/Technical School,he attended the Royal University of Malta where he graduated as a Legal Procurator in 1973,later at the University of Malta,graduating as a Notary Public in 1978 and Doctor of Laws in 1979.[ citation needed ]
Mallia lectured Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the University of Malta.[ citation needed ]
Mallia holds posts as legal advisor to a number of Companies and Employers' Associations. He has served as president of the Casino Maltese for eight years,and four years Vice President to the Malta Red Cross. He sat on committees set up under the auspices of the Council of Europe. Mallia was also a member of the executive committee and Council of the Malta Football Association and the Car Racing Association,and President of the Pembroke Basketball Club.[ citation needed ]
Mallia is the founder member and the senior managing partner of a law firm,situated at Msida,Malta called,Emmanuel Mallia &Associates established in 1980. He has formed part of defence teams in international criminal trials held in the United Kingdom,the Netherlands and Italy,foremost the Lockerbie Trial.[ citation needed ]
Mallia is a member of the Camera degli'Avvocati,the International Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Mallia contested Malta's general elections for the first time in March 2013 on the Labour Party ticket and was elected in the 9th district (Ħal Għargħur,L-Imsida,San Ġwann,Is-Swieqi,Ta' Xbiex) and district 10 (Il-Gżira,Pembroke,San Ġiljan,Tas-Sliema).
He announced his candidature at the Labour Party General Conference in January 2012 when he was invited to address this assembly on the last day,just before the closing speech of the leader Joseph Muscat.[ citation needed ]

The politics of Malta takes place within a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic,whereby the president of Malta is the constitutional head of state. Executive authority is vested in the president of Malta,with the general direction and control of the Government of Malta remaining with the prime minister of Malta,who is the head of government and the cabinet. Toni Abela is a Maltese politician who was elected as Deputy Leader of the Malta Labour Party in June 2008. A lawyer by profession,he co-drafted Malta's Whistle Blower Act,Party Financing Act and the law that removed politicians' legal protection from cases of abuse and corruption. He was nominated by the Government of Malta to serve as a member of the European Court of Auditors but this nomination was rejected. He is now a judge presiding over the First Hall of the Civil Court of Malta.
Carmelo Abela is a Maltese politician and is serving as an incumbent Labour MP and was the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security. He also served as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion,and as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta. On 15 January 2020 he was appointed as Minister within the OPM in Robert Abela's cabinet.
General elections were held in Malta on Saturday,3 June 2017 to elect all members of the House of Representatives. The elections were contested by the Labour Party,led by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat,the Nationalist Party,led by opposition leader Simon Busuttil,and four other parties,making it the elections with most parties participating since 1962.

Cyrus Engerer is a former Maltese Member of European Parliament representing the Labour Party. A gay rights activist,he was the leading spokesperson for the Yes campaign at the 2011 Maltese divorce referendum. In 2021 he was tasked with negotiating the European Parliaments historic resolution on the declaration of the European Union as an LGBTQ Freedom zone,in reaction to the establishment of so called "LGBT-Free zones" in Poland. Engerer later went on to write the European Parliaments resolution which condemned the laws in Hungary which effectively banned "LGBT propaganda" in the vicinity of schools. From 2014 till 2019 Engerer was the Prime Minister's special envoy to the European Union. He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in November 2020. After he joined the Labour Party the Police of Malta opened an investigation against him,leading to his father's arrest,the opening of a court case against him on spreading pornography and the arrest of his mother on election day. He himself was convicted for spreading revenge porn and received a suspended two years term imprisonment. He is the partner of Partit Laburista's Member of Parliament Randolph De Battista.

The Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister of Malta,officially called Head of Secretariat of the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Malta,is the most senior political appointee in the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta. The chief of staff is appointed by the prime minister as its senior aid. This position acts as the principal advisor to the prime minister and it coordinates the work action of the different departments of the government.
The 2019–2020 Maltese protests started in Valletta and other urban centres of Malta on 20 November 2019,mainly calling for resignations after alleged political links to the assassination of journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia surfaced following the arrest of businessman Yorgen Fenech. The protesters also targeted government corruption and the lack of action on money laundering. The protests consisted of demonstrations,marches,sit-ins,and civil disobedience and have been unprecedented in Malta's political history since its independence from the United Kingdom.
Robert Abela is a Maltese lawyer and politician who has served as prime minister of Malta and leader of the Malta Labour Party since 2020. The son of former President George Abela,he was elected to Parliament in 2017. Abela was sworn in as prime minister following the resignation of Joseph Muscat on 13 January 2020.
Jonathan Attard is a Maltese lawyer and politician. A former journalist,he is currently serving as Malta’s Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector Minister,since March 2022.
