Empire College is a private for-profit college in Santa Rosa, California. Founded in 1961, The college offers business and law degrees and is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools and the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California. In February 2020, the school announced that it was closing its School of Business over the next 18 months, citing lower enrollment that was worsened by three years of wildfires. [1]

History

The college was founded in 1961 by Henry Trione. [2] It was first located in the Bank of America building on Old Courthouse Square. When the bank moved out in 1961, Trione bought the building and immediately gilded the top of the clock tower. [2]

In 2012, Empire College received national recognition on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, one of two colleges in the state of California in that category. In 2013 Empire was one of the top 19 finalists in the nation, and in 2014 and 2015 Empire was again recognized "with distinction." [3] The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, annually highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve meaningful, measureable outcomes in the communities they serve. Empire's service-based learning opportunities include a variety of free legal, tax, healthcare and wellness clinics. [4]

In 2011, the U.S. Education Department reported that students who graduated from Empire College's business school were defaulting on student loans more than twice the national average. [5] In 2019, the U.S. Department of Education reported that Empire College's 3-year cohort default rate for FY 2016 had dropped to 4.1 percent, [6] a rate lower than that of Santa Rosa Junior College (8.5 percent) and the national average (10.1 percent). Walden University is a private online for-profit university headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It offers bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and specialist degrees. The university is owned by Adtalem Global Education, which purchased the university in August 2021.

The Fairfield Osborn Preserve is a 450-acre nature reserve situated on the northwest flank of Sonoma Mountain in Sonoma County, California. There are eight plant communities within the property, oak woodland being the dominant type. Other communities include chaparral, Douglas fir woodland, native Bunch grass, freshwater marsh, vernal pool, pond and riparian woodland. The flora is extremely diverse including many native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, grasses, lichens and mosses. A diverse fauna inhabits this area including black-tailed deer, coyote, bobcat and an occasional mountain lion; moreover, there are abundant avifauna, amphibians, reptiles and insects.

Credo High School is a tuition-free, college prep public charter school in Rohnert Park, California, following the core principles of public Waldorf education and serving students in ninth through twelfth grades. The school has been expanding annually since it opened in 2011, and there are 400 students for the 2018-2019 school year. Credo High School was granted charter approval in 2010 after three years of planning by a development team led by Executive Director Chip Romer and Education Director Thomas Schaefer. For-profit colleges, also known as proprietary colleges, are post-secondary schools that rely on investors, and survive by making a profit. They include for-profit vocational and technical schools, career colleges, and predominantly online universities. For-profit colleges have frequently offered career-oriented curricula including culinary arts, business and technology, and health care. These institutions have a long history in the US, and grew rapidly from 1972 to 2009. The growth of for-profit education has been fueled by government funding as well as corporate investment, including private equity.
