Enayatullah Nazari was the acting minister of defense of Afghanistan from 8 August 2012 to 15 September 2012 serving for a transitional period. He took over from Abdul Rahim Wardak who resigned after a no-confidence vote by the Afghan parliament. [1] [2] Nazari previously served as Wardak's deputy defense minister. On September 15,2012,Bismillah Khan Mohammadi took over as the new Defense Minister.
Born in Parwan Province into a Tajik family in 1954,Nazari went on to study Political Science and Law in the capital city Kabul. Nazari worked for the Afghan Attorney General's Office and the Ministry of Justice during the communist and later the post-communist Islamic State period. When the Taliban rose to power,he kept working with the anti-Taliban Islamic State administration of Burhanuddin Rabbani. After the fall of the Taliban regime,Nazari served as the Minister of Refugees. He was appointed to the position of Deputy Minister of Defense in 2010,a post he filled until becoming the acting defense minister. Nazari is said to be loyal to Afghan Vice President Mohammad Fahim.
Burhānuddīn Rabbānī was an Afghan politician and teacher who served as President of Afghanistan from 1992 to 1996,and again from November to December 2001.

He is fluent in Pashto,Dari (Persian),and English.
Bismillah Khan Mohammadi,or Bismillah Khan,is an Afghan politician who served as the defense minister of Afghanistan from 2012 to 2015 and for two months in 2021. From 2002 to 2010,he served as Chief of Staff of the Afghan National Army,and from 2010 to 2012 he held the post of Interior Minister of Afghanistan. He has an anti-Taliban background and once served as a senior commander under Ahmad Shah Massoud. Despite the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in August 2021,Mohammadi claims to remain the minister of defense as part of the government of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan.

On 21 January 2019,in central Afghanistan,the Taliban attacked a military compound in Maidan Shar,killing officers of the Afghan National Directorate of Security. The Taliban attacked while engaging in the process of negotiating a truce with the United States. The attack began when an explosives-laden car rammed through a military checkpoint and onto the grounds of the compound,where the vehicle detonated. After the explosion,two gunmen entered the base and opened fire on Afghan soldiers,before the two were shot down. A senior official in the Afghan defense ministry said that 126 people were killed in the explosion. The Taliban claimed responsibility and stated that over 190 people were killed in the attack. The Afghan National Directorate of Security (NDS) reported that 36 military personnel were killed in the attack. Afghan president,Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack and said that the 'Afghan intelligence agency personnel were target of the attack'.
Amir Khan Muttaqi is an Afghan Taliban politician serving as acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan since 7 September 2021. He was also a member of the negotiation team in the Qatar office.

Several countries have vowed never to recognize the Islamic Emirate,and others have said they will do so only if human rights in the country are respected. Some countries have accredited Taliban diplomats at the chargéd'affaires level despite not recognizing the Islamic Emirate. In September 2023,China became the first country to formally name a new ambassador to the country since the takeover,and in January 2024 recognized the Taliban's envoy to China;however,China still does not formally recognize the Taliban.

Under the leadership of the Taliban,the government is a theocracy and an emirate with political power concentrated in the hands of a supreme leader and his clerical advisors,collectively referred to as the Leadership. The Leadership makes all major policy decisions behind closed doors,which are then implemented by the country's civil service and judiciary. As Afghanistan is an Islamic state,governance is based on Sharia law and Pashtunwali,which the Taliban enforces strictly through extensive social and cultural policy.
