The Battle of Ilomantsi was a part of the Svir–Petrozavodsk Offensive of the Continuation War (1941–1944). It was fought from 26 July to 13 August 1944, between Finland and the Soviet Union in an area roughly 40 kilometers wide and 30 kilometers deep, near the Finnish-Soviet border, close to the Finnish village of Ilomantsi, in North Karelia. The battle ended with a Finnish victory—the last major Soviet attack against Finland was stopped here.

Jesse Kaikuranta is a Finnish singer. He spent his childhood in Ähtäri, but resides in Kokkola. While working as a qualified singing instructor, he took part in The Voice of Finland in 2012, the inaugural season of the show in Finland. In the blind audition stage broadcast on 20 January 2012 he auditioned with "The Edge of Glory" by Lady GaGa. Two of the four judges turned their chairs. He picked Paula Koivuniemi to be his mentor. He proceeded through various stages of the show to reach the Final 4, where he sang "Vie mut kotiin" as his choice for winning single. He finished 3rd/4th with Mikko Sipola winning the title and Saara Aalto as runner-up.

The song spent 12 weeks at number one on the Finnish Singles Chart. A music video was uploaded to YouTube in July 2012. According to IFPI Finland, the single sold 3,187 copies in 2012.
