Diocletian,nicknamed "Jovius",was Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305. He was born Diocles to a family of low status in the Roman province of Dalmatia. Diocles rose through the ranks of the military early in his career,eventually becoming a cavalry commander for the army of Emperor Carus. After the deaths of Carus and his son Numerian on a campaign in Persia,Diocles was proclaimed emperor by the troops,taking the name Diocletianus. The title was also claimed by Carus's surviving son,Carinus,but Diocletian defeated him in the Battle of the Margus.
Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American novelist,short-story writer,and journalist. His economical and understated style—which included his iceberg theory—had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction,while his adventurous lifestyle and public image brought him admiration from later generations. The Manhattan Project was a research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapons. It was led by the United States with the support of the United Kingdom and Canada. From 1942 to 1946,the project was under the direction of Major General Leslie Groves of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer was the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory that designed the bombs. The Army component was designated the Manhattan District,as its first headquarters were in Manhattan;the name gradually superseded the official codename,Development of Substitute Materials,for the entire project. The project absorbed its earlier British counterpart,Tube Alloys. The Manhattan Project began modestly in 1939,but employed nearly 130,000 people at its peak and cost nearly US$2 billion. Over 90 percent of the cost was for building factories and to produce fissile material,with less than 10 percent for development and production of the weapons. Research and production took place at more than 30 sites across the United States,the United Kingdom,and Canada.

The Heysel Stadium disaster was a crowd disaster that occurred on 29 May 1985 when mostly Juventus fans escaping from a breach by Liverpool fans were pressed against a collapsing wall in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels,Belgium,before the start of the 1985 European Cup Final between the Italian and English clubs. William James "Count" Basie was an American jazz pianist,organist,bandleader,and composer. Ansel Easton Adams was an American landscape photographer and environmentalist known for his black-and-white images of the American West. He helped found Group f/64,an association of photographers advocating "pure" photography which favored sharp focus and the use of the full tonal range of a photograph. He and Fred Archer developed a system of image-making called the Zone System,a method of achieving a desired final print through a technical understanding of how the tonal range of an image is the result of choices made in exposure,negative development,and printing.
