Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati is a professional Equity theatre at 1127 Vine Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was founded in 1986 as the Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, adopting it current name in April 2012. [1] It is Greater Cincinnati's second largest professional theatre. [2] The company is "dedicated to producing world and regional premieres of works that often explore compelling social issues".
David A. White III and Jeff Seibert founded the organization in 1986 as a company for local professionals who were members of Actors’ Equity Association, performing at Memorial Hall in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Co-founders Ruth Sawyer and Mary “Murph” Taft Mahler helped secure their current home at 1127 Vine Street in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. Several notable playwrights premiered their works here in the organization's early years, such as Edward Albee's Seascape and his adaptation of Everything in the Garden in the early 1990s. [3]
White and Seibert left the organization in 1995, and current artistic director D. Lynn Meyers was hired as interim artistic director for a three-month period, which turned into an ongoing role into the 2020s. Her tenure has been characterized by notable regional premieres, such as I Am My Own Wife and Side Man . [4]
In recent years, the organization has expanded with a significant 2017 renovation, adding 8,200 square feet to the building and adding spaces for classes and events. Ensemble has also expanded to present musicals and an annual holiday family show. [5]
