Eqbal Dauqan

Eqbal Mohammed Abdu Dauqan (born 1980) is a Yemeni-Malaysian biochemist known for her studies of nutrition, advocacy for refugees, and support of women scientists in her home country of Yemen and adopted country of Malaysia. [1] [2]

She earned her bachelor's degree in biological chemistry in 2002 and a master's degree in organic chemistry in 2008, both from Taiz University in Yemen. She earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry in 2012 at the National University of Malaysia under a scholarship from the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World, and remained there as a postdoctoral researcher. [1] In 2014, Dauqan received the Elsevier Foundation Award for Early Career Scientists in the Developing World for her work on antioxidants in vegetable oils. [3]

She became a professor and Head of the Department of Medical Laboratories Sciences at Al Saeed University in Taiz, Yemen. [3] She earned acclaim for her popular writing. [1] [2] In 2015, after her university was bombed and members of her family killed as part of the Yemeni Civil War, she returned to the National University of Malaysia as an assistant professor in chemical science and food technology, sponsored by the Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund. [1] [2] She is now activity mentoring junior scholars who work in critical environments. [4]

In 2019, she was elected to the Global Young Academy.

Lourdes J. Cruz Filipino biochemist

Lourdes J. Cruz is a Filipino biochemist whose research has contributed to the understanding of the biochemistry of toxic peptides from the venom of fish-hunting Conus marine snails. Throughout the Philippines, she is known as the Sea Snail Venom Specialist. The characterization of over 50 biologically active peptides from the snail's venom had been made possible, in part, by her studies. Scientific findings regarding the peptides found in snails have applications in diagnostic tools for cancers and the development of drugs for the treatment of neurological disorders. She has also contributed to the development of conotoxins as tools for examining the activity of the human brain. Jennifer Anne Doudna is an American biochemist who has done pioneering work in CRISPR gene editing, and made other fundamental contributions in biochemistry and genetics. She received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, with Emmanuelle Charpentier, "for the development of a method for genome editing." She is the Li Ka Shing Chancellor's Chair Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. She has been an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1997.

The first Ghanaian woman to attain the rank of full professor of natural science, Addy became a role model for school girls and budding female scientists on the limitless opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Judith Klinman American biochemist

Judith P. Klinman is an American chemist, biochemist, and molecular biologist known for her work on enzyme catalysis. She became the first female professor in the physical sciences at the University of California, Berkeley in 1978, where she is now Professor of the Graduate School and Chancellor's Professor. In 2012, she was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Barack Obama. Al Saeed University is a university in Taiz, Yemen. It was founded in 2004, and added several departments in applied and medical sciences in 2013. The university was funded by Hayel Saeed Anam Group. Biochemist Eqbal Dauqan was Head of the Department of Medical Laboratories Sciences. In 2015 the University was bombed as part of the Yemeni Civil War, causing it to shut down.

Julia Laskin is a Russian–American Chemist who is the William F. and Patty J. Miller Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Purdue University. Her research considers the chemistry of complex molecules and the processes involved in the activation of complex ions after collisions with surfaces. She was awarded the medal of the Russian Society for Mass Spectrometry in 2017.
