Ernst Kussul (29 May 1938 - 3 March 2023) was a Lithuanian researcher in artificial neural network, particularly for problems of handwriting recognition, mechatronics and the manufacture of microelectromechanical systems. He also published research papers on renewable energy, including for concentrated solar power. At the end of his life, he worked at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in the Microtechnology and Neural Networks group of the Department of Micro and Nanotechnologies of the Institute for Applied Sciences and Technology (ICAT). Ernst Kussul received the Ph.D., degree in 1967 and the D.Sc., degree in 1982, both in neural networks from the Institute of Cybernetics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Kyiv, Ukraine [2] .
He worked as researcher for the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Institute of Cybernetics around 1980's.
In the last stage of his career, Dr. Kussul worked in UNAM, Mexico from 1998 until he died (2023) [1] .
He was "C level researcher" according to UNAM researchers category, PRIDE level "D" and member of the Mexican National Research System (SNI) level II. He coordinated the research group called "Microtechnology and Neural Networks" until 2007, he was head of the "Laboratory of Micromechanics and Mecatronics" at the same institute [1] .
The Dr. Kussul authored 16 patents in Mexico, ex Soviet Union, Russia, Ukraine and USA. In Mexico, he registered 6 patents (four with UNAM and three together with the CINVESTAV), has 1 patent in USA and two patents in Spain, and 5 copyrights [1] .
He authored more than 300 publications, including 105 international journal articles, 6 articles in Mexican journals, 19 chapters of books, six books (two with editorial Springer), 90 international congresses and participated in 59 Mexican congresses [1] .
Dr. Kussul participated as responsible in 19 Mexican and international projects, accumulated 19 technical reports in the UNAM, 2 reports with ICYTDF, 2 reports with SUEMA. Dr. Kussul was also CONACYT projects evaluator [1] .
Dr. Kussul was Member of IEEE from 2003 and Senior Member from February 2019 [1] [2] . Dr. Kussul was a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences from 2008. The Dr. Kussul was Member of Mexican Academy of Technology from 2000. In 2016 he was awarded the Prize of UNAM in area of Technological Innovation and Industrial Design [1] .
Ernst Kussul died on the morning of Friday March 3rd, 2023 at his home in Mexico City when he was 84 years 9 months old.

Lotfi Aliasker Zadeh was a mathematician, computer scientist, electrical engineer, artificial intelligence researcher, and professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. Zadeh is best known for proposing fuzzy mathematics, consisting of several fuzzy-related concepts: fuzzy sets, fuzzy logic, fuzzy algorithms, fuzzy semantics, fuzzy languages, fuzzy control, fuzzy systems, fuzzy probabilities, fuzzy events, and fuzzy information. Zadeh was a founding member of the Eurasian Academy.
Teuvo Kalevi Kohonen was a Finnish computer scientist. He was professor emeritus of the Academy of Finland.
Sankar Kumar Pal is a computer scientist and the President of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata. He is also a National Science Chair, Government of India. Prof. Pal is a computer scientist with an international reputation on pattern recognition, image processing, fuzzy neural network, rough fuzzy hybridization, soft computing, granular mining, and machine intelligence. He pioneered the development of fuzzy set theory, and neuro-fuzzy and rough-fuzzy computing for uncertainty modelling with demonstration in pattern recognition, image processing, machine learning, knowledge-based systems and data mining. Prof. Pal is widely recognized across the world for his pioneering and extraordinary contributions in Machine Intelligence, Fuzzy Logic, Soft Computing and Pattern Recognition. This has made India a leader in these disciplines in international scenario. He founded the Machine Intelligence Unit in 1993, and the Center for Soft Computing Research: A National Facility in 2004, both at the ISI. In the process he has created many renowned scientists out of his doctoral students.

His M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are from Politechnika Gdaṅska ranked as #1 among Polish universities of technology. Plamen P. Angelov is a computer scientist. He is a chair professor in Intelligent Systems and Director of Research at the School of Computing and Communications of Lancaster University, Lancaster, United Kingdom. He is founding Director of the Lancaster Intelligent, Robotic and Autonomous systems (LIRA) research centre. Angelov was Vice President of the International Neural Networks Society of which he is now Governor-at-large. He is the founder of the Intelligent Systems Research group and the Data Science group at the School of Computing and Communications. He is member of the Board of Governors also of the Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society of the IEEE for two terms (2015-2017) and (2022-2024). Prof. Angelov was named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2016 for contributions to neuro-fuzzy and autonomous learning systems. He is also a Fellow of ELLIS and the IET. Dr. Angelov is a founding co-Editor-in-chief of the Evolving Systems journal since 2009 as well as associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems, IEEE Transactions on AI, Complex and Intelligent Systems and other scientific journals. He is recipient of the 2020 Dennis Gabor Award as well as IEEE and INNS awards for Outstanding Contributions, The Engineer 2008 special award and others. Author of over 400 publications including 3 research monographs, 3 granted US patents, over 120 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals, over 160 papers in peer reviewed conference proceedings, etc. These publications were cited over 15000 times, h=index 63. His research contributions are centred around autonomous learning systems, Wiley, 2012, dynamically self-evolving systems and the empirical approach to machine learning, Springer Nature, 2012. Most recently, his research is addressing the problems of interpretability and explainability, xDNN, 2020, catastrophic forgetting, continual learning, ability to adapt, computational and energy costs of deep foundation models and their whole life cycle.
