Erwin Raymond Java (Assen, 1956 [1] ) is a Dutch guitarist, active since the 1970s, and a music teacher.
Java got his first guitar, a Fender Stratocaster, from his father when he was a teenager. [2] After attending the gymnasium in Assen, he studied Dutch language and literature at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Later he attained a degree in music, majoring in guitar, from the Prince Claus Conservatoire. [1]
One of his first bands was White Honey, from 1978 to 1981, where he played with Hanneke Kappen. When that band stopped, he joined Herman Brood's Wild Romance (1980–1981), [3] [1] and in 1986 joined Cuby and the Blizzards, [4] a band headed by singer Harry Muskee, for whom Java was a chauffeur for a quarter of a century. [5] Java also plays as a session musician and produces music, [1] and has recorded with and done production for Marjol Flore, Splitsing, Gina de Wit, Bertus Borgers, Daniel Sahuleka, Kaz Lux, and Tineke Schoemaker.
In 1996 he co-founded the Noorder Muziek Instituut in Groningen, a professional private music school, where he also taught guitar. [1]

Assen is known for TT Circuit Assen, the motorcycle racing circuit, where on the last Sunday in June the Dutch TT is run; and also for the annual Assen Dance Festival.
Football Club Groningen is a Dutch professional association football club based in the city of Groningen, province of Groningen. Founded on 16 June 1971 as the successor of GVAV, the team compete in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of Dutch football, following relegation from the 2022–23 Eredivisie. Groningen played their inaugural season in the Eredivisie, before the side were relegated to the Eerste Divisie in 1973–74 as they got into financial difficulties. Groningen were promoted back to the Eredivisie as champions in 1979–80 and remained in the top flight for almost 20 seasons before they dropped to the second tier in 1997–98. The team won promotion to the Eredivisie in 1999–2000, where they remained for 23 seasons before suffering relegation in 2022–23.
Peize is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. Located in the northern part of Drenthe approximately 10 kilometers south of the city of Groningen. It is part of the municipality of Noordenveld, located between Roden and Eelde.
Grolloo is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze, and lies about 11 km southeast of Assen.
Cuby + Blizzards, also known as Cuby & the Blizzards, were a Dutch blues group, founded in 1964 by vocalist Harry Muskee and guitarist Eelco Gelling. During the 1960s, the band's mixture of sound, drawing upon a variety of genres which included blues and rock and roll, gave them a pioneering sound which was completely different from any other Dutch band in the same period. The spelling of the name varies, with 'Cuby' also written as 'QB' and the ampersand (&) also written as 'and' or '+' and the 'and' sometimes left out. The spelling 'Cuby + Blizzards' was used on the first albums.
Loon is a village in the Netherlands and is part of the Assen municipality in Drenthe. The hunebed (dolmen) D15 is located near the village.
Nederbeat is a genre of rock music that began with the Dutch rock boom in the mid-1960s influenced by British beat groups and rock bands such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Much like British freakbeat, it is essentially the Dutch counterpart to American garage rock. Among the best-known Nederbeat groups are the Golden Earrings, The Motions, The Outsiders and Shocking Blue.
Johannes Gerrit "Johan" Derksen is a Dutch sports journalist and former football player. He played professional football between 1966 and 1978 for six clubs: Go Ahead Eagles, Cambuur, Veendam, HFC Haarlem, SV Meppen and MVV Maastricht. During and after his footballing career, he became a sports journalist, specialising in football. He was the editor-in-chief of Voetbal International, the Netherlands' most prominent football magazine, from 2000 until his retirement in 2013. Derksen was while working at Voetbal International and after his retirement a television football pundit on RTL7's Voetbal International and Veronica Inside on Veronica TV. His current TV talkshow is Vandaag Inside on SBS6.
Eelco Gelling is a Dutch blues guitarist. Gelling played with Cuby + Blizzards until 1976.
Harry "Cuby" Muskee was the singer of the blues band Cuby + Blizzards, which he co-founded with Eelco Gelling. Muskee was born in Assen, and died in Rolde aged 70.

Hans Heyting, born Johannes Heijting was a Dutch poet, playwright, radio personality, children's book writer and painter. Writing in Drèents, he was one of the earliest Drèents writers to express personal themes and is considered to have been "the first true, modern Drèents poet who innovated old forms and showed new ways".

The Provinciale Drentsche en Asser Courant was a regional newspaper in Drenthe, Netherlands, published in Assen from 1851 to 1966. It was a continuation of the Nieuws- en Advertentieblad voor de Provincie Drenthe (1823–1826) and Drentsche Courant (1826–1851). It was continued as the Drentse en Asser Courant (1966–1992) and Drentse Courant (1992–2002). In 2002 the Drentse Courant merged into the Dagblad van het Noorden, a shared newspaper for readers in the provinces Groningen and Drenthe.
The Bintangs are a Dutch rhythm and blues band. Founded in 1961 in Beverwijk as an indorock band, they soon began playing a rougher, rhythm and blues-inflected style. The band had a four-year hiatus in the 1980s but reunited and are still active. The band has gone through many members, with Frank Kraaijeveld as a constant element. They scored one hit, in 1970, and though commercial success has eluded them nationally and internationally they remain a popular live act.
Dick Rienstra was a Dutch singer and actor. Rienstra began his musical career in a local group, The Double S Combo, where he sang and played guitar, clarinet, and saxophone. In 1960 he debuted on the radio in a KRO program, and in 1962 on the TV, in a VARA talent show. He moved to Amsterdam in 1963 and got a job in a musical comedy production as a singer and an actor in skits, and in 1966 signed with the Snip en Snap Revue. With the Amsterdams Volkstoneel he performed in the musical De Jantjes, and later formed a musical duo called De Jantjes as well. He was a contender in the preliminaries for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1977, and after that performed in the theater and in minor roles on television. He played a role in the comedy film Flodders in America (1992) and played the lead in the EO drama series De laatste carrier (1994).
Gerard van Klaveren is a Dutch politician. From 2005 to 2017 he has been mayor of the Dutch municipality of Weststellingwerf, and From 2018 to 2020 he has been acting mayor from the island of Ameland. In 2003 he became Honorary Consul of Iceland.
Hanneke Kappen is a Dutch singer and radio and TV presenter. Kappen started a musical career by singing in a rock band in the late 1970s during the zenith of the Groningen music scene, but became a radio presenter and from 1981 to 1982 had a weekly show that focused on heavy metal music, only the second such show on Dutch radio. She then moved on to television, presenting programs for a number of public broadcasters. She returned to radio in 1999, while continuing to play and record music.
