The Ethel Preston memorial, also known as Ethel at the Gate, [1] is a grade II listed grave monument from 1913 in Lawnswood Cemetery, Leeds, England.
The memorial marks the graves of husband and wife Ethel and Walter Preston. [2] The principal feature is a life-sized statue of Ethel, holding a bouquet and wearing the costume of a choir that she sang in. [3] [2] Ethel stands within a classical-style porch rendered in white Italian marble, reputedly modelled after the portico of the Prestons' house (now demolished), the Grange in Beeston. [2] [4] The roof of the porch is supported on four composite order columns. To the rear of the statue is a depiction of an entrance-way with black marble panelled doors, shown slightly ajar. The roof is formed of an entablature with a cornice detail above and a balustraded parapet on the top. [2]
The memorial has two inscriptions; the first is to Ethel noting that she died 24 March 1911 at the age of 50, and that she was married to Walter and lived at The Grange. The second inscription is to Walter and notes that he died on 24 October 1930 and had been married to Ethel and then to an Emily. [2]
Ethel died at her home in 1911; within a year Walter had married his 22-year-old housekeeper Emily Florence Richardson. [3] [5] Walter, an industrial chemist, had the memorial erected in 1913 and said he had been inspired by similar graves he had seen in Italy. [1] [3] There are two suggestions as to the inspiration for the monument. The first is that it symbolises the love between the couple and depicts Ethel in the entrance to her house waiting for her husband to return home. [1] The open door indicates that she waits to be reunited with her husband in death. [5] The other is that it is a mark of regret by Walter for his womanising and that this is reflected in the sad expression on the face of the statue. [1] The sculptor of the piece is not known. [6]
After its 1913 unveiling the memorial was visited by thousands of people, who each paid a penny for the privilege. [1] The cost of the monument was stated in a 1913 news report as being £2,000 but a 1930 report has it costing £5,000. [3] The memorial received statutory protection on 11 September 1996 as a grade II listed building. [2] Since the 2000s fresh flowers have often been left in the statue's arms. [1]
Edith Agnes Kathleen Young, Baroness Kennet, FRBS was a British sculptor. Trained in London and Paris, Scott was a prolific sculptor, notably of portrait heads and busts and also of several larger public monuments. These included a number of war memorials plus statues of her first husband, the Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Although the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography describes her as "the most significant and prolific British women sculptor before Barbara Hepworth", her traditional style of sculpture and her hostility to the abstract work of, for example Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, has led to a lack of recognition for her artistic achievements.
William Ordway Partridge was an American sculptor, teacher and author. Among his best-known works are the Shakespeare Monument in Chicago, the equestrian statue of General Grant in Brooklyn, the Pietà at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan, and the Pocahontas statue in Jamestown, Virginia.
Roundhay Garden Scene is a short silent motion picture filmed by French inventor Louis Le Prince at Oakwood Grange in Roundhay, Leeds, in Yorkshire on 14 October 1888. It is believed to be the oldest surviving film. The camera used was patented in the United Kingdom on 16 November 1888.
Sir George James Frampton, was a British sculptor. He was a leading member of the New Sculpture movement in his early career when he created sculptures with elements of Art Nouveau and Symbolism, often combining various materials such as marble and bronze in a single piece. While his later works were more traditional in style, Frampton had a prolific career in which he created many notable public monuments, including several statues of Queen Victoria and later, after World War I, a number of war memorials. These included the Edith Cavell Memorial in London, which, along with the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens are possibly Frampton's best known works.

St Michael's Cemetery is a Catholic burial ground in the Rivelin Valley area of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The cemetery stands on a steep hillside on the south side of Rivelin Valley Road at its junction with Rivelin Road and Hollins Lane.
The Statue of Robert Falcon Scott, commonly known as the Scott Statue, is a statue in Christchurch, New Zealand commemorating British Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott. The statue was unveiled in 1917 and is located at a small recreational park at the intersection of Worcester Street and Oxford Terrace in Christchurch Central City. Scott likely died on 29 March 1912 during his Terra Nova Expedition to the South Pole. His death became public knowledge on 10 February 1913, in response, locals organised a committee dedicated to Scott within one week of the news of his death. The statue was commissioned to be carved by Scott's widow, Kathleen Scott, in which she travelled to a marble quarry in Italy to carve it in March 1916. Her work was shipped to New Zealand in late 1916 and was unveiled on 9 February 1917. The statue is one of few monuments recognising the significance of early 20th-century Antarctic exploration.
The Leeds General Cemetery is a former cemetery in Woodhouse, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is now within the campus of the University of Leeds and has been landscaped and kept as an open space. Some original monuments and the cemetery chapel remain.
John Hutchison was a Scottish sculptor based in Edinburgh. He was the son of an unnamed builder, and his artistic life began as a thirteen-year-old woodcarving apprentice. He attended art school in the evenings, then later became a student at the Trustees Academy. and attracted the patronage of its owner, Patrick Allan Fraser, who gave him commissions to fund his study in Rome. Although after Rome he continued to enjoy ancient Roman sculptural themes, he remained in Edinburgh for the rest of his life, working in wood, clay and marble, and concentrating on portraiture of Scottish people, and images of Scottish myth and history. He created the bust of Sir Walter Scott in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. He was a successful artist who received commissions from Queen Victoria.
Catherine Mawer was an architectural sculptor who worked alongside her husband Robert Mawer, then following his death in 1854 she ran the family stone yard as a master sculptor at Great George Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, until 1859. The other master sculptor in her 1854–1859 company, which was known as Mrs Mawer, was her nephew William Ingle who supervised the stone yard and onsite works from 1854. Her apprentices were Matthew Taylor, Benjamin Payler, and her son Charles Mawer. All the apprentices later had independent careers as sculptors. After her son came of age in 1870, she continued working alongside Charles and her nephew William in the partnership Mawer and Ingle at the same address. Catherine was a founder member of the Mawer Group, which comprised all of the above Leeds architectural sculptors. During her lifetime, the Mawer group produced some strongly lifelike and often unflattering portraits, full of movement, including portraits of men with overhanging moustaches and cavernous mouths. These portraits continued after the deaths of Robert Mawer and William Ingle, but stopped appearing at her death in 1877. It is therefore reasonable to conclude that this style of work was her own.
Mawer and Ingle was a company of architectural sculptors, based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, between 1860 and 1871. It comprised cousins Charles Mawer and William Ingle (1828–1870), and Catherine Mawer (1804–1877) who was mother of Charles and aunt of William. The group produced carvings on many Gothic Revival churches and their internal furnishings. They also worked on civic buildings, warehouses and offices. Many of these are now listed by Historic England, and many of the surviving buildings are within Yorkshire. Their work outside Yorkshire included Trent Bridge.
Harlow Hill Cemetery on Otley Road, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England, is a local authority cemetery established on land donated by Henry Lascelles, 4th Earl of Harewood in 1869, and consecrated on 3 October 1871 by the Bishop of Ripon. It features the Gothic Revival Church of All Saints, designed by Isaac Thomas Shutt and Alfred Hill Thompson. It has individual memorials to casualties of World Wars I and II, and other graves include those of actor Michael Rennie and Catherine Gurney, an activist in the Temperance movement in the United Kingdom.
The Margaret MacDonald Memorial is a sculpture by Richard Reginald Goulden, beside the path at the north edge of the public park at Lincoln's Inn Fields, London. It became a grade II listed structure in 1974.
Adel and Wharfedale is a ward in the metropolitan borough of the City of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It contains 40 listed buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England. Of these, one is listed at Grade I, the highest of the three grades, and the others are at Grade II, the lowest grade. The ward is to the north of the centre of Leeds, and contains the areas of Adel and Cookridge, and countryside to the north. The ward contains St John's Church, which is listed at Grade I, and associated buildings and monuments in the churchyard are listed. Also in the ward is Lawnswood Cemetery, which contains listed buildings and memorials, including a war memorial. In the ward is Cookridge Hall, which is listed together with associated structures. The other listed buildings include houses, farmhouses and farm buildings, two milestones, a public house, and a former reform school.
The Jubilee Memorial, Harrogate, is a Grade II listed building. It is a Gothic Revival stone memorial in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England, commemorating the 1887 golden jubilee of Queen Victoria. It was donated to Harrogate by its mayor, Richard Ellis, designed by architect Arthur Bown, and unveiled by the Marquis of Ripon.
Laceby Cemetery is the burial ground for the village of Laceby in Lincolnshire. Owned and maintained by Laceby Parish Council, it is notable for the grade II listed Haagensen Memorial and Vault in its ground, which was erected in 1897.
