Ratu Etuate Tavai (1958 -1999) [1] served as Attorney General of Fiji from 1996 to 1999. He also served as a Senator.
He was called to eternal rest on 11 October 1999 at the relative young age of 41.
Ratu Tavai was born on 20 February 1958 at Lautoka,Fiji. He hailed from the chiefly village of Viseisei,Vuda and was a son of the paramount chiefly family of the Vanua of Vuda.
He started his education at Vuda District School and later attended Lelean Memorial School. He pursued his tertiary studies at the University of the South Pacific,Laucala Campus. He then attended the University of Auckland,where he attained his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelors of Law.
He began his legal career as a prosecutor at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution. He then gained further legal experience in the private and public sector.
Ratu Tavai was first elected in Parliament in 1992 and served as Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office. Subsequent appointments included Minister for Information,Broadcasting and Telecommunications between 1995 and 1996 before being appointed as Attorney-General in 1996,a position he held until May,1999.
During his time as Attorney-General,he achieved a number of milestones:
- He facilitated the enactment of the 1997 Constitution of Fiji.
- A record number of Bills went through Parliament during his tenure.
- He was instrumental in ensuring that the legal profession continued to maintain high standards and successfully saw the enactment of the Legal Practitioners Act,Trust Accounts Act and the Legal Aid Act.
- The first Attorney-General's Conference was held through his guidance.
- Quite controversial,he also refused to legalize same-sex marriage and other homosexual relationships. [2]
Ratu Tavai was survived by his wife and two daughters.
Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara,was a Fijian politician,who served as Chief Minister from 1967 to 1970,when Fiji gained its independence from the United Kingdom,and,apart from one brief interruption in 1987,the first Prime Minister from 1970 to 1992. He subsequently served as President from 1993 to 2000.

Ratu Tevita Momoedonu was a Fijian politician who served as the fifth Prime Minister of Fiji twice –each time extremely briefly. Both appointments were to get around constitutional technicalities;his first term of office –on 27 May 2000 lasted only a few minutes. His second term –from 14 to 16 March 2001 was for two days. He subsequently served his country as Ambassador of Fiji to Japan. Using his chiefly title of "Taukei Sawaieke",he later led pushed for the Yasana of Ba to secede from the Burebasaga and Kubuna Confederacies to form their own fourth confederacy under the Tui Vuda,Ratu Josefa Iloilo,who died in 2011.
The Conservative Alliance was a right-wing political party in Fiji,and a member of the ruling coalition government. It was commonly known as the CAMV, a combination of the initials of its English and Fijian names. At its annual general meeting on 17 February 2006,the party voted to dissolve itself and merge with its coalition partner,the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL). The President of the party at the time of its dissolution was Ratu Tanoa Cakobau,a Bauan chief,while Ratu Josefa Dimuri served as General Secretary. For legal reasons,Parliamentary members of the disbanded party maintained a separate caucus in the House of Representatives,under the leadership of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu,until the end of the parliamentary term,on 27 March 2006.
Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi,Lord Madraiwiwi Tangatatonga was a prominent Fijian lawyer,legal scholar,jurist,and politician. He served as vice-president,and also acting president,of Fiji,and Chief Justice of Nauru.
Ratu Naiqama Tawake Lalabalavu is a Fijian Paramount Chief and the current speaker of the parliament. He had served as the leader of the opposition.

Ratu Alifereti Finau Mara was a Fijian lawyer,politician,and diplomat. He was best known as the eldest son of former Prime Minister and President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. Since December 2001,he held the official position of Roving Ambassador and High Commissioner,representing Fiji's interests in Pacific Island nations. It was reported on 13 March 2006 that he had been chosen to succeed his late father as Paramount Chief of the Lau Islands,but in 2009 the succession was still unclear,with Mara reportedly refusing to discuss the issue with the village elders.
Sir Vijay Raghubar Singh,KBE was an Indo-Fijian lawyer and politician who held Cabinet office in the 1960s and 1970s. Vijay Singh served in Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara's government in a variety of positions,including Attorney-General,and was president of the Indian Alliance,a division of the ruling Alliance Party. He quit the party in 1979 following disagreement with Alliance leadership and later joined the opposition National Federation Party. Vijay Singh was involved in the restructure of the Fiji sugar industry and was a leading member of the Jaycees movement in Fiji.
The Tui Cakau is the Paramount Chief of Cakaudrove Province in Fiji. In Modern Fiji this chiefly title is regarded as the most senior in the Tovata Confederacy,and the third most senior in the country.
Qoriniasi Babitu Bale was a lawyer and politician who served twice as Fiji's Minister for Justice and Attorney-General,most recently from 2001 to 2006,when he was deposed in the military coup of 5 December. Like many of Fiji's most influential leaders,Bale was a native of Levukana in Vanua Balavu in the Lau Islands.

Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda,was a Fijian politician who served as the 3rd President of Fiji from 2000 until 2009,excluding a brief period from 5 December 2006 to 4 January 2007. He held the traditional title of Tui Vuda,the paramount chief of the Vuda district in Ba Province on Fiji's northwest coast. Like many Fijian people,he rarely used his surname and was known simply as Josefa Iloilo. He announced on 28 July 2009 that he would be leaving office on 30 July. At the age of 88,he was the world's oldest head of state.
Lelean Memorial School is one of the largest co-ed schools in Fiji. It was established in 1943 and is run by the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma. It is co-located at the Davuilevu Methodist Compound with the Davuilevu Theological College and the Young People's Department,which runs training for Methodist catechists.

Ratu Rakuita Saurara Vakalalabure is a Fijian lawyer and former politician. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1999 and following the elections after the 2000 political upheavals was a candidate of the Conservative Alliance (CAMV). He was re-elected to the House of Representatives,winning the Cakaudrove West Fijian Communal Constituency in the parliamentary election of 2001,following in the footsteps of his father,Ratu Tevita Vakalalabure,who claimed to hold the chiefly title of Vunivalu of Natewa,in Cakaudrove Province,and who served in both houses of Parliament from the 1970s to the 1990s. He was subsequently appointed Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives,but on 5 August 2004,he was sentenced to six years' imprisonment for his role in the Fiji coup of 2000,however the sentence was successfully reduced on appeal.
