The chancellor of the exchequer, often abbreviated to Chancellor, is a senior minister of the Crown within the Government of the United Kingdom, and head of Treasury. As one of the four Great Offices of State, the chancellor is a high-ranking member of the British Cabinet.
The Scottish Government is the executive arm of the devolved government of Scotland. It was formed in 1999 as the Scottish Executive following the 1997 referendum on Scottish devolution. Shona McRory Robison is a Scottish politician who has served as Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government since 2023. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), she previously served as Deputy First Minister of Scotland from 2023 to 2024. Robison has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Dundee City East since 2003 and was an additional member for the North East Scotland region from 1999 to 2003.
The deputy first minister of Scotland is the second highest minister in the executive branch of the Scottish Government after the first minister of Scotland. The role is currently held by Kate Forbes since 8 May 2024, following her appointment by John Swinney alongside her portfolio as Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Gaelic.
Transport Scotland is the national transport agency of Scotland. It was established by the Transport (Scotland) Act 2005, and began operating on 1 January 2006 as an executive agency of the Scottish Government.
Nicholas Ian Macpherson, Baron Macpherson of Earl's Court, is a former senior British civil servant. He served as the Permanent Secretary to the Treasury from 2005 to 2016.
The Ministry of Finance is the Dutch Ministry responsible for economic policy, monetary policy, fiscal policy, tax policy, incomes policy, financial regulation, the government budget and the financial market. The Ministry was created in 1798 as the Department of Finance of the Batavian Republic. It became the Ministry of Finance in 1876. The Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government, commonly referred to as the Finance Secretary, is a member of the Cabinet in the Scottish Government. The Cabinet Secretary has Ministerial responsibility for the Scottish Government's Finance Directorates.
The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, commonly referred to as the Health Secretary, is a cabinet position in the Scottish Government. The Cabinet Secretary is responsible for the Health and Social Care Directorates and NHS Scotland.
The work of the Scottish Government is carried out by Directorates, each headed by a Director. The Directorates are grouped into a number of Directorates-General families, each headed by a Director-General. However, the individual Directorates are the building blocks of the system. The Directorates are further broken down into 'Divisions' and then by Units and finally by Teams. Divisions usually consist of 25-50 people. There is no direct correspondence between the political responsibilities of the Ministers in the Scottish Government and the Directorates, although in some cases there is considerable overlap. The Directorates are also responsible for a number of government agencies and non-departmental public bodies. Some government work is also carried out by Executive Agencies such as Transport Scotland, who sit outside the Directorates structure, but are also staffed by civil servants.
The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) is a non-departmental public body funded by the UK Treasury that provides independent economic forecasts and independent analysis of the public finances.
The Scottish Government budget is an annual Act of the Scottish Parliament, giving statutory authority to the Scottish Government for its revenue and expenditure plans. For the financial year 2024/25 the budget was approximately £59.7 billion. The Scottish Government Budget Bill is presented to Parliament by the Cabinet Secretary for Finance. The current Cabinet Secretary for Finance is Shona Robison who was appointed to the role in March 2023.
The Scottish Exchequer is a group of Directorates of the Scottish Government. The Exchequer was formed in December 2010 with a re-organisation of the Scottish Government.
The Social Security Directorate is a directorate of the Scottish Government responsible for social security policy in Scotland. The directorate ensures the smooth and secure transition of benefits that are to be devolved to the Scottish Parliament, amounting to £2.8 billion.
The Scottish Government Corporate Directorates are a group of Directorates of the Scottish Government. The Directorates are headed by Lesley Fraser, who was appointed to the interim role Director-General (DG) for Organisational Development and Operations in July 2019, before the role became Director-General Corporate in March 2021. Primarily, DG Corporate is solely responsible for the organisational improvements of the Scottish Government and its associated Cabinet Secretaries and Ministers. The responsibilities of the role include people and capability, staff engagement, ministerial support, communications, digital, legal services, facilities and estates, financial management, commercial and procurement functions.
The Education and Justice Directorates of the Scottish Government are a group of directorates of the Scottish Government. The Director General for Education and Justice is Neil Rennick who was appointed to the role in September 2023. He has direct responsibility for education in Scotland, as well as advancing the learning of the people of in the country. Additionally, the directorate holds responsibility for safety and the justice system of the country's communities. The Director-General Education and Justice is a member of the Scottish Government's Corporate Governance Board.
