Ezema is one of four sub-communities that made up Nru Nsukka town in Nsukka Local Government Area, Nigeria. It is adjacent to the three other sub-communities in Nru Nsukka: Edem Nru, Umuoyo Nru and Iheagu. It also shares common boundaries with Various communities such as Umuoyo, Iheagu, Agbamere/Amike and Umabor both in Eha Alumona.

Otobogidi mini market is the most popular mini and daily market in Ezema. It is a hub of home use goods and refreshment zone. Evangel school is also located here.

The main entrance roads to the community are from Fen Park junction (Enugu Road), Umabor Eha Alumona, Amolu Road via Community Secondary School Nru Nsukka and via Iheagu.

The community of Ezema is part of Ezema ne Edem autonomous community in Igboland, a cultural region of Southeastern Nigeria, and is dominated by Igbo-speaking peoples. Politically, it is part of Nru Nsukka the local government area of Nsukka, Enugu state. Ezema is merged with Edem and both are under the government of HRH Atugwu Linus Oko(Alias:Igwe Chimereze 1) of Ezema ne Edem, Nru Nsukka.

Villages

The community of Ezema is made up of eleven villages: Amagu(pronounced Amégú), Amugoro, Amamkpume, Uwelu, Amankwo, Umumkporogidi, Amorah, Amaezedim, Umuokwo, Umuezeudo and Umuario. Each village has its own village head, known as Onyishi, which is usually the eldest man in the village.

The oldest village in Ezema is Amagu, which acts as the main gathering point for all meetings involving the elders or the Ezema community.

Ezema is believed to be one of the most peaceful communities in Nru Nsukka.[ citation needed ]

Organizations

The most-active group in Ezema is the Ezema Youth Association (incorporated in 2016) and the Ezema ne Edem Development Union. The development Union in conjunction with the Igwe's council control every affairs of Ezema and Edem community. [ citation needed ]

Geography

The high hills called Ugwu Ezema ne Edem are located in this sub-community.

Ofulonu Ezema is a land owned by Ezema Community. It is not a village rather it is a community made of indigenes of Ezema Nru. Besides it lays a big hill known as Ugwu Ezema. One of the Hills belongs to the neighboring community (Edem Nru) and the other to Ezema Nru and that is why the hills are referred as Ugwu Ezema ne Edem. Besides the hill, there is a village known as Amike village from Agbamere/Eha Alumona.

Business and occupations

Otobogidi is the business hub in Ezema, and also serves as the most-centralized point for the Ezemanians. Otobogidi also serves as mini-market for the Ezema community.

Otobogidi serves as a point of Meeting for joint gatherings involving Ezema and Edem only for non-delicate discussions otherwise Amegu Ezema remains their general point of meeting.

Many of the people of Ezema are artisans (such as blacksmithing, bricklaying, roofers/carpentry, etc.), farmers and the rest into trade and buying. Blacksmithing skills, for example, have been maintained for centuries in Ezema community by Amorah village precisely.

Most of the occupants of Ezema land operate businesses in the Nsukka Central market known as Ogige main market.[ citation needed ]

The two major religions in Ezema are Christianity and Odinani, the Igbo traditional religion.

Those who practice Odinani pay homage to the deity Idenyi nkwo (also referred to as Alusi). Worship is led by the Attamah (chief priest) who is from, and resides in, Ezema.

Unadu is a community in Igbo Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria. It lies North West of Nsukka. Boundaries are formed by (Akpanya) Kogi state To the North, Enugu-Ezike, Itchi and Alor-Agu. Unadu plays host to Afor Market, popularly known as Afor Unadu and situated at the central area of the community. Unadu is made up of two autonomous communities: Ohomu Unadu and Obaka Unadu. Each of the autonomous communities is ruled by a traditional chief called the Igwe.

Lejja is a community comprising 33 villages in Enugu State of South-Eastern Nigeria. It is populated by the Igbo people and located about 14 Kilometers from Nsukka. It is the location of a prehistoric archaeological site which contains iron smelting furnaces and slag that dates back to 2000 BC. The village square at Otobo ugwu which is likely the first village square in Lejja that contains over 800 blocks of slag with an average weight, between 34 and 57 kg. Geophysical investigations have located buried iron slag in several other locations in the community.

The Waawa clan of Northern Igboland, also referred to as Ndi Waawa, Wawa People, are a unique sub-group of the Igbo people in Enugu and Ebonyi State, Nigeria, consisting of several communities, who all speak a unique dialect of Igbo called Waawa. The most notable among these are the Agbaja and Ngwo which consist of peoples between the wooded lands of Awka to the rocky valleys of Enugu. The Agbaja are made up of communities in present-day Ngwo clan, Udi, Ezeagu, Umulokpa, Igbo-Etiti, Oji River, greater Awgu, Odume, Ndiagbor, Nenwe, Mpu, Okpanku and Enugu East Local Government Areas. Other notable parts of the Waawa clan include Nkanu, Nsukka, Abia, Nike, Agbani, Owo, and other communities in Enugu State. The Waawa are most notably associated with Chief Onyeama's people from Eke, who was the paramount ruler of Agbaja in the early 20th century.

The Osu caste system is a traditional practice in Igboland, characterized by social segregation and restrictions on interaction and marriage with a group of individuals known as Osu. The Osu individuals historically were marginalized by the Igbo deities (Alusi), and as a result, they are often perceived as inferior and segregated from the Nwadiala or diala class.

Iheagu, Nru Nsukka is the oldest sub communities in Nru Nsukka. It's the birthplace of people like Late Sen. Fidelis Okoro, Egbugo Charles Onumonu and Sylvanus Arumah. Nru Nsukka has traditionally three major communities namely Iheagu Nru, Ezema Nru, Edem Nru and finally Umuoyo. Late Sen. Okoro hails from Iheagu, Nru Nsukka.

Nru Nsukka is a suburb located in Nsukka town. Nru Nsukka is one of the former old three autonomous communities: Mkpunanor, Nru and Ihe n'Owerre that made up the Nsukka urban area. Nru Nsukka having been upgraded to a suburban area was split into three newer autonomous communities with newly installed traditional rulers. Since 2018, the suburb is now made up of Iheagu Nru autonomous community with its traditional ruler as Sylvanus Arumah, Ezema ne Edem autonomous community with its traditional ruler as Linus.O. Atugwu and the youngest being Umuoyo Nru autonomous community with Paul Atanike as its traditional ruler elect.

Neke is a town located in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State in South Eastern Nigeria. Bordered by towns such as Nike, Ikem, Mbu, Eha Amufu, Obollo and UmuAlor, Neke is a small town with a strong backbone. In the pre-colonial era, the people of Neke were known as fearsome warriors who had an economic stronghold on neighboring areas. In the present day, there are 5 main districts located in Neke namely; Ishienu, Akpani, ObeguAba, Umugwu and Umuegwu. These districts represent villages made up of clans and kindred prominent to the town's social structure.

Chinwe Nwogo Ezeani, is a Nigerian Chartered Librarian and the immediate past University Librarian of Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (U.N.N.). She is a Professor of Library and Information Science. Her tenure as a University Librarian (UL) at Nnamdi Azikiwe Library was between March 2014-March 2019. She is the first female University Librarian since the inception of Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria Nsukka. In April, 2021, Dr. Ilo Promise Ifeoma took over as the current University Librarian of Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, (U.N.N)

Nsukka is a region located in Enugu State of Southeastern Nigeria that has drawn particular archaeological interest. This area has yielded several examples of iron, metal, clay, and stone production that have contributed to the country’s development over the years. In the territory referred to as Igboland, in which Nsukka resides, Alumona is recognized as a focal point for metal working, whilst Opi, Obimo, Lejja, Orba, Nrobo, Onyohor, Ekwegbe, and Umundu are related back to iron smelting.
