FAMEL - Fabrica de Produtos Metalicos Lda, was one of the largest Portuguese moped manufacturers between 1960s and 1980s.
Based in Águeda, the company was set up in the second half of the 1940s by three partners with the aim of producing moped and bicycle rims. In 1952, it decided to diversify its activities into the manufacture of mopeds. Until its closure, in 1994, it manufactured over 30 models using engines from various third parties, including Pachancho, Alpino, Rex, Veloce, Mota, Jlo, Dkw and, mostly, Zündapp. Its first model, the Utilitária, with a 2 speed Pachancho engine, dates from 1952 whereas the last one, the Famel Electric (an electrical scooter) dates from 1994. [1] Its first big market success was the Foguete, a tubular cradle moped with a Jlo 3 speed engine launched in 1957 which was quite good looking at the time and which came out when Famel's main competitor, Cruzador, was stuck with quite old and dated models. When two years later, in 1959, Cruzador launched a totally new model, the Andorinha Asa d'Ouro, with a Sachs 3 speed engine, the Foguete lost a lot of its shine and its production was discontinued shortly after. Famel's most popular model was the XF-17, launched in 1975. [1] and sold until the company went bankrupt in 1994.
It was a 5 speed 50 cc (3.1 cu in) moped based in the Suzuki Stinger T125 which was produced from 1969 to 1971 (and which was powered by a 15 hp (11 kW) (claimed) @ 8,500rpm engine. [2] As the increased purchasing power in their home country Portugal made automobiles more and more popular, the moped market became smaller and the strong competition from European and Japanese imported models forced bankruptcy.
The company's last product, the Famel Electric, or Electron, was the world's first electric scooter. It was developed in 1993. [1] with Portuguese technology in partnership with EFACEC. The entire (small) production was sold to La Poste before FAMEL stopped production[ citation needed ]. The following year, Peugeot presented their Scoot'elec based on the same technology.
After stopping production in 1994 due to financial problems, Famel was declared bankrupt in 2002.
After being declared insolvent in 2002, the brand remained forgotten until 2014, when its revitalization was announced through an electric mobility project that over time presented evolutions and developments of models that culminated in 2022 with the presentation of two versions of prototypes inspired by the old XF-17, but now with electric motorization. The forecast for the start of commercialization is scheduled for 2024.

Zündapp was a major German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel under the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G.m.b.H." as a producer of detonators. In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined after World War I, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor of the company, and two years later he diversified into the construction of motorcycles.

Malaguti is an Italian bicycle, scooter and motorcycle company based in San Lazzaro di Savena, founded by Antonino Malaguti in 1930. Producing bicycles until 1958, they then entered the motorcycle market. Noted for their use of small engines in their bikes. In October 2011, Malaguti laid off its remaining employees in Bologna, Italy as the company eventually folded.
Maicowerk A.G., known by its trading name Maico is the name of a family company in the Swabian town of Pfäffingen near Tübingen. Founded in 1926 by Ulrich Maisch as Maisch & Co, the company originally manufactured 98 and 123 cc Ilo two-stroke engines. After World War II, they began producing their own unit construction two-stroke engines, selling complete motorcycles. Maico made a brief foray into the automobile business with their own line of microcars in the late 1950s. Maico have also made go kart engines.
Simson was a German company which produced firearms, automobiles, bicycles and motorcycles, and mopeds. Under the Third Reich, the factory was taken from the Jewish Simson family, and was renamed several times under Nazi and later Communist control. The Simson name was reintroduced as a brand name for mopeds produced at the factory in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Simson mopeds were then produced in Suhl (Germany) until 2002.

Metalurgia Casal was the largest Portuguese motorcycle manufacturer, based in Aveiro. It was founded in 1964 with João Casal as the managing director and Robert Zipprich and other ex-Zundapp engineers as the technical managers. Its first products included agricultural machinery and two strokes' moped engines based on Zundapp ones. By 1967 it was producing complete motorcycles, the first one being a scooter, the S170 Carina - a copy of the Zundapp R50 - with a 50cc and 4 speed engine. Shortly after it rolled out its first mopeds, the K160, K161, K162 and K163 with two speeds, and the K181 with four speeds. Although most of its production were mopeds, it also produced 125cc bikes, namely the K260, K270 and K276 all, and it had an advanced plan for a 250cc, the K280. Its range included some 30 or more models, with automatic engines, 2 speed, 4 speed, 5 speed and 6 speed engines Even though its main market was, by far, the domestic market, it also exported some 10% of its production, mostly to the UK, Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. It also had a promising joint venture with Solo of Germany under which some models were sold in the German market under the Solo brand. Car production was also planned, but not realised. As the increased purchasing power in their home country Portugal, their most important market, slowed the sales of mopeds, bankruptcy was a fact in February 2000. In connection with this, unfortunately, parts of the company's archives were destroyed.
