Fact-Check Ghana is a non-profit fact-checking project under the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA). [1] [2] The first fact-checking project in Ghana was set up to promote fact-based public discourse, especially in the media landscape that has seen a significant increase in internet access. [3] Fact-Check Ghana is headquartered in Accra and operates in the same newsroom with MFWA's investigative journalism project, The Fourth Estate. [4] [5] Fact-Check Ghana is a signatory to International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) principles [6]

History

Fact-Check Ghana was established in 2016 to address the spread of misinformation, disinformation and malinformation by newsmakers during that year's Ghanaian election. [7] Since then, it has become one of the key fact-checking organizations in Ghana, verifying claims made by newsmakers. Kwaku Krobea Asante has been the team lead and editor since the inception of the project. [8] [5] [9]

Works

Fact-Check Ghana verifies pictures and videos suspected of containing falsehoods or misleading statements. Their work spans various categories, including politics, health, social issues, elections, and the economy. Producing reports in English and other Ghanaian languages including Twi, Ga, Hausa, and Ewe, among others

Fact-Check Ghana also conduct information literacy and fact-checking training to journalists and media practitioners in Ghana. [10] [11] Some of their notable works includes:

Partnership

Fact-Check Ghana in partnership with two fact-checking organisations which include Dubawa, FactSpace West Africa and other civil society organisations working on information hygiene, integrity and resilience in Ghana have formed the Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition.

The Coalition was established to tackle information disorder in the lead-up to Ghana’s 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. Its goal is to create a collaborative and coordinated effort to counter the serious threat posed by misinformation and disinformation. [17] [18] [19] [20]

Controversy

Kow Essuman, the legal counsel to President Nana Akufo-Addo, denied a Fact-Check Ghana's report claiming the president misled the country by stating that the World Health Organization (WHO) ranked Ghana among the top countries for managing the COVID-19 pandemic. [21] [22]

The New Patriotic Party symbol is the African elephant and the New Patriotic Party colours are red, white, and blue.

John Dramani Mahama is a Ghanaian politician, and the president-elect of Ghana, having won the 2024 Ghanaian general election. He will be inaugurated as President of Ghana on 7 January 2025. John Mahama previously served as President of Ghana from 24 July 2012 to 7 January 2017 and Vice President of Ghana from January 2009 to July 2012. He took office as president on 24 July 2012, following the death of his predecessor, John Atta Mills.

General elections were held in Ghana on Friday 7 December 2012 to elect a president and members of Parliament in 275 electoral constituencies. Owing to the breakdown of some biometric verification machines, some voters could not vote, and voting was extended to Saturday 8 December 2012. A run-off was scheduled for 28 December 2012 if no presidential candidate received an absolute majority of 50% plus one vote. Competing for presidency were incumbent president John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), his main challenger Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and six other candidates.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2020 Ghanaian general election</span>

General elections were held in Ghana on 7 December 2020. Incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was re-elected in the first round after securing a majority of the votes. Former President John Dramani Mahama announced that he would contest the results. At the Supreme Court, a petition challenging the result was filed on 30 December, and unanimously dismissed on 4 March 2021 for lack of merit.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Presidency of Nana Akufo-Addo</span> Ghanaian presidential administration from 2017 to present

The presidency of Nana Akufo-Addo began on 7 January 2017. Following the 2016 Ghanaian general elections, Nana Akufo-Addo the flag-bearer of the New Patriotic Party, succeeded John Mahama as the 5th President of the Ghanaian Fourth Republic after winning by a landslide. He won a second term on 9 December 2020 in a tightly contested race against National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate and former president, John Mahama.
