Fairbanks Morse Defense, a subsidiary of Arcline Investment Management, is an American manufacturer of engines and other products. Established in 2020, it is one of three separate corporate entities that can trace its roots to Fairbanks-Morse, an American manufacturing company that operated independently from 1823 to 1958. The company's structure includes Fairbanks Morse Services, Fairbanks Morse Technology, and FMD's Strategic Collaborators.

The company has supplied marine technologies, engines, details, and more to the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command, and Canadian Coast Guard. As of 2024, Fairbanks Morse Defense products power more than 80% of the United States Navy ships with medium-speed engines.[ citation needed ]

History

The company derives from Thaddeus Fairbanks' 1823 founding of an ironworks in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. [1] The company grew and operated independently until it was acquired by Penn-Texas Corporation in 1958. The conglomerate first renamed itself Fairbanks Whitney Corporation, then Colt Industries in 1964, taking the name from Colt Manufacturing, the maker of firearms and another asset of Penn-Texas. In 1990, Colt Industries sold its firearms business (to C.F. Holdings Corp as Colt's Manufacturing Company, Inc.) and became Coltec Industries. In 2002, Fairbanks Morse was spun off in a grouping named EnPro Industries, which on January 21, 2020, sold Fairbanks Morse to Arcline Investment Management. [2]

Arcline named its new subsidiary Fairbanks Morse Defense [3] , signaling its intention to pursue defense-sector sales. [4]

In 2021, the company acquired Ward Leonard, [5] Welin Lambie, [6]  and Hunt Valve, [7] thus creating the Fairbanks Morse Defense family of brands. The expansion continued in 2022 with the addition of Federal Equipment Company, [8] Maxim Watermakers, [9] and Research Tool and Die (RT&D). [10]

In October, Fairbanks Morse Defense acquired American Fan, [11] and in 2024, the company purchased Massachusetts-based metalworking supplier Samtan Engineering Corporation. [12]

Rosinco was a diesel-powered luxury yacht that sank in Lake Michigan off the coast of Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1928. The yacht was built in 1916 as Georgiana III and served during World War I as USS Georgiana III, a Section patrol craft, under a free lease to the Navy by her owner and commanding officer. After the war the yacht was sold and renamed Whitemarsh in 1918. In 1925, after sale to Robert Hosmer Morse of Fairbanks-Morse, the yacht became Rosinco. She was sunk following a collision in 1928 and the wreck was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

The Fairbanks-Morse 38 8-1/8 is a diesel engine of the two-stroke, opposed-piston type. It was developed in the 1930s, and is similar in arrangement to a contemporary series of German Bombers aircraft diesels. The engine was used extensively in US diesel electric submarines of the 1940s and 1950s, as backup power on most US nuclear submarines, as well as in other marine applications, stationary power generation, and briefly, locomotives. A slightly modified version, the 38ND 8-1/8, continues in service on Los Angeles-, Seawolf-, and Ohio-class nuclear submarines of the US Navy. The 38 8-1/8 has been in continuous production since its development in 1938, and is currently manufactured by a descendant of Fairbanks-Morse, FMDefense, in Beloit, Wisconsin.

The Cleveland Diesel Engine Division designed several 2 stroke diesel engines for submarines, tugboats, destroyer escorts, Patapsco-class gasoline tankers and other marine applications. Emergency generator sets were also built around the Cleveland Diesel and were installed in many US warships. The division was created in 1938 from the GM-owned Winton Engine Corporation and was folded into the GM Electro-Motive Division in 1962. The engines continue in use today on older tugs.

The Colt Infantry Automatic Rifle 6940, is a Light machine gun designed by Phil Hinckley and manufactured by American firearms manufacturer Colt.
