Fairlie Bakehouse

The Fairlie Bakehouse is a bakery in Fairlie, New Zealand. The bakery is most famous for producing gourmet meat pies. Popular varieties include salmon and bacon, venison and cranberry, and steak. Their most popular variety is a pork belly and apple sauce pie, with a piece of crackling on the top. [1]

The bakery was opened in 2010 by Austrian-born chef Franz Lieber. [2] [3] As of 2020, at peak the bakery produces around 2500 pies a day, and uses 6 tonnes (13,000 lb) of pork a month. [4] Pies are sold from the premises, and are also sold wholesale to supermarkets around the South Island. The bakery has become a popular stopping place for travellers on the road between Lake Tekapo and Timaru, [5] in part due to positive reviews on tourism review website Tripadvisor. [6]

In 2014 the bakery produced a "ram pie" (made with lamb) to celebrate the Mackenzie Rugby Club making it to the semifinals of the Hamersley trophy competition. [7]

The business won the People's Choice Award from the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018, and a regional hospitality industry award in 2013. [8] [2] In 2024 Fairlie Bakehouse pies were used in a pie-eating contest by the Aoraki Foundation. [9]

The bakery has never won an award at the Bakel's New Zealand Pie Awards. Owner Franz Lieber has previously declined to enter the competition due to a perception that South Island bakeries are at a disadvantage. [10]

The bakery employs 65 staff in Fairlie, [4] which has a population of under 1000. [11]

Murphy directed several Hollywood features during the 1990s, before returning to New Zealand as second-unit director on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Murphy was also a scriptwriter, special effects technician, schoolteacher and trumpet player at different times. He was married to Merata Mita, a film director, actor, writer.

Geraldine is 45 km east via state highway 79 and Timaru is 58 km southeast of Fairlie via state highway 8. Fairlie sits at an altitude of 301 metres above sea level.

Pork Pie is a 2017 New Zealand road comedy film written and directed by New Zealander Matt Murphy and produced by Tom Hern. The film is a remake of the 1981 movie Goodbye Pork Pie, the first New Zealand film to win a substantial local audience. The remake stars Dean O'Gorman, James Rolleston and Ashleigh Cummings as a trio of accidental outlaws who travel the length of New Zealand in a stolen orange New Mini. The film was scored by Jonathan Crayford.

Ethan Rusbatch is a New Zealand basketball player for the Franklin Bulls of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL). He began his New Zealand NBL career in 2012 with the Southland Sharks after spending one season in the United States playing college basketball for Lincoln Trail College. After playing for the Taranaki Mountainairs in 2013, he spent the next four seasons with the Canterbury Rams. He joined the Hawke's Bay Hawks in 2018 and won the NZNBL's Most Improved Player in 2019. Robert William Nigel Hutchinson was an English-born New Zealand film producer and commercial director best known for co-producing the 1981 film, Goodbye Pork Pie, with Geoff Murphy. Hutchinson also made a small cameo in the classic New Zealand film as a dairy farmer. He produced other films and television commercials, most recently Home by Christmas in 2010.

Shea Ili is a New Zealand professional basketball player for Melbourne United of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL). He is also contracted with the Sandringham Sabres of the NBL1 South. Izayah Mauriohooho-Le'afa is a New Zealand professional basketball player for the Wellington Saints of the New Zealand National Basketball League (NZNBL). He is also contracted with the Sydney Kings of the Australian National Basketball League (NBL). He began his career in the New Zealand NBL, playing three seasons for the Wellington Saints before moving to the United States in 2016 to play college basketball for the Sacramento State Hornets. After graduating in 2020, he played a season for the Auckland Huskies and earned NZNBL Defensive Player of the Year and NZNBL All-Star Five. He subsequently joined the South East Melbourne Phoenix in the Australian NBL and played two seasons before joining the New Zealand Breakers in 2022.
