Faith Helen Wainwright MBE FREng FICE FIStructE (born 1962) [1] is a British structural engineer, and a director of Arup Group. She has led in the structural design of multiple landmark buildings including the American Air Museum and the Tate Modern and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Bath. [2] Wainwright is the 2018 President of the Institution of Structural Engineers [3] [4] and sits on the Editorial Board of Ingenia (the educational magazine of the Royal Academy of Engineering). [5]

Education

Wainwright attended Queen Anne's School [1] and was one of the first female graduates of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where she earned a degree in engineering in 1983. [2]

Career

Wainwright joined Arup after her graduation. At Arup she has contributed to The Shard, Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters, Tate Modern, Velodrom (Berlin), Lycée Albert Camus (in Frejus, France) and has worked alongside architects such as Renzo Piano, Norman Foster, Baron Foster of Thames Bank, and Ken Shuttleworth. Wainwright has been instrumental in transforming the structural engineering community, including influencing the "Confidential Reporting on Structural Safety" [6] and has served as the first-ever woman on the Joint Board of Moderators [7] (the professional body which regulates accreditation of university degree programmes in Civil engineering). [2]

In 2014 Wainwright sat on the Research Excellence Framework sub-panel 14 (Civil and Construction Engineering) [8] to assess the quality of University-based academic research in the UK.

Recognizing the importance of education and structural engineering, Wainwright established Arup University. [9]

Awards

In 2003, Wainwright was in the Arup team who won the International Information Industry Award recognizing their "innovation in knowledge management". [10]

She was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2003, [1] an MBE in 2012 for services to the built environment and engineering professions [11] [12] and an Honorary DEng from Bath University in 2014. [1]

In 2015 Wainwright was elected an honorary fellow of St Edmund Hall. [1] [13]

She gave her inaugural address as President of the Institution of Structural Engineers on Thursday 11 January 2018. [3] [14]

Maggie Aderin-Pocock Nigerian-British space scientist

Margaret Ebunoluwa Aderin-Pocock is a British space scientist and science educator. She is an honorary research associate of University College London's Department of Physics and Astronomy. Since February 2014, she has co-presented the long-running astronomy television programme The Sky at Night with Chris Lintott. In 2020 she was awarded the Institute of Physics William Thomson, Lord Kelvin Medal and Prize for her public engagement in physics. She is the first African woman to win a gold medal in the Physics News Award. She has also earned the title of the president-elect of the British Science Association.

Christopher Mark Wise is an English academic and engineer. Wise began his career with Ove Arup and Partners in 1979. After working in UK, Australia and US, he became Arup's youngest Director in 1992, and later became one of five Board Directors responsible for Building Engineering's 500 engineers and support staff. In 1999 he left Arup and co-founded Expedition Engineering together with Seán Walsh.

In 2016 the Women's Engineering Society (WES), in collaboration with the Daily Telegraph, produced an inaugural list of the United Kingdom's Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering, which was published on National Women in Engineering Day on 23 June 2016. The event was so successful it became an annual celebration. The list was instigated by Dawn Bonfield MBE, then Chief Executive of the Women's Engineering Society. In 2019, WES ended its collaboration with the Daily Telegraph and started a new collaboration with The Guardian newspaper.

She is past president and former chief executive of the Women's Engineering Society (WES), and in 2018 was an ambassador for the Year of Engineering, promoting engineering careers through a roadshow aimed at meeting parents.

Roma Agrawal British structural engineer

Roma Agrawal is an Indian-British-American chartered structural engineer based in London. She has worked on several major engineering projects, including the Shard. Agrawal is also an author and a diversity campaigner, championing women in engineering.

Yewande Akinola is a Chartered Engineer who specialises in sustainable water supplies. She works as Principal Engineer for Laing O'Rourke and hosts television shows about engineering for Channel 4 and National Geographic.

Dervilla Mitchell Irish engineer

Dervilla Mitchell HonCBE, FREng, FIEI is an Irish engineer and a director and joint deputy chair of Arup Group. She led the management of the design for London Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5, and as of 2019 was project director for Arup for a 2-billion dollar airport terminal development in Abu Dhabi. She is a Fellow of two national engineering academies, and the holder of an honorary CBE.

Margaret Law was a British engineer and pioneer in the field of fire science and fire safety engineering who became one of the world's leading fire scientists. In 1971, she was the first woman to become a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers, and has been described as representing 'the epitome of placing applied and rigorous technical excellence at the heart of the design and construction of the built environment'.
