The Farmers Branch Police Department operates in Farmers Branch, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, Texas with a population of about forty thousand people.

The chief is Kevin McCoy. [1] The department has two divisions, Patrol, and Support Services Division. The Department has a bike patrol, and police dog unit. [2] It also operates a jail with sixteen officers assigned. [3] The jail is a short-term lockup that holds prisoners for less than three days. [4]

One of the department's officers has died in the line of duty. In August 1983, Officer Lowell Clayton Tribble was shot from ambush and killed. Although a suspect was charged, the case is still unsolved. [5]

In November 2007, the department conducted a series of police raids on Unique Performance properties. Unique Performance was a company in Farmers Branch that built Carroll Shelby-licensed "Eleanor" Mustangs and Chip Foose 1969 Camaros. However, several customers complained that they had paid for cars and not received them. The department seized sixty-one vehicles that had tampered Vehicle Identification Numbers. Unique Performance declared bankruptcy a week later. [6]

Since 2012, Farmers Branch together with the cities of Addison, Carrollton, and Coppell has jointly operated the NorTex Metro SWAT unit. [7] [8]

In March 2013, an off-duty police officer, Ken Johnson, shot two boys who were breaking into his car. He chased the two in his car, crashing into theirs and then fired eighteen shots, killing one of the two. In 2018, he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to ten years in confinement. The incident was captured on video not controlled by the police. [9]

In June 2019, one of the department's officers, Michael Dunn, was indicted for murder after he killed an unarmed man who was driving a stolen truck. The shooting was caught on video not controlled by the police. [10]

On December 28, 2017, a fatal swatting incident occurred in Wichita, Kansas, United States. During an online dispute between Casey Viner and Shane Gaskill, regarding the video game Call of Duty: WWII, Viner threatened to have Gaskill swatted. Gaskill responded by giving him a false address for his residence, one that was occupied by an uninvolved person, Andrew Finch. Viner then asked Tyler Barriss to make the required fraudulent call to initiate the swatting. Wichita Police responded to the address, and as Finch was exiting his house, police officer Justin Rapp fatally shot him.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Murder of Botham Jean</span> 2018 murder case in Texas

On the night of September 6, 2018, 26-year-old accountant Botham Jean was murdered when off-duty Dallas Police Department patrol officer Amber Guyger entered Jean's apartment in Dallas, Texas and fatally shot him. Guyger, who said that she had entered Jean's apartment believing it was her own and believed Jean to be a burglar, was initially charged with manslaughter. The absence of a murder charge led to protests and accusations of racial bias, since Jean was a black man and unarmed and was killed in his own home by a white off-duty officer who had apparently disregarded police protocols. On November 30, 2018, Guyger was indicted on a charge of murder. On October 1, 2019, she was found guilty of murder, and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment the following day. The ruling was upheld on appeal in 2021.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Killing of Atatiana Jefferson</span> 2019 police manslaughter of a woman in Fort Worth, Texas

Atatiana Koquice Jefferson, a 28-year-old woman, was shot inside her home by a police officer in Fort Worth, Texas, United States, in the early morning of October 12, 2019. Police arrived at her home after a neighbor called a non-emergency number, stating that Jefferson's front door was open. Police body camera footage showed officers walking outside the home with flashlights for a few minutes then one officer yells, "Put your hands up! Show me your hands!", while discharging his weapon through a window. Police found a handgun near Jefferson's body, which according to her eight-year-old nephew, she was pointing toward the window before being shot. On October 14, 2019, Officer Aaron Dean, the shooter, resigned from the Fort Worth Police Department and was arrested on a murder charge. On December 20, 2019, Dean was indicted for murder. Jefferson was black and the officer who shot her is white, prompting news outlets to compare Jefferson's shooting to the September 2018 murder of Botham Jean in nearby Dallas.

On February 15, 1971, Rene Guzman and Leonardo Lopez abducted five law enforcement officers in West Dallas, Texas, killing three of them and injuring a fourth at a site near the Trinity River. The fifth deputy was able to escape the shooting uninjured and call for help. Guzman and Lopez were suspects in a burglary in Ellis County, Texas, and the officers were obtaining consent-to-search forms when they were abducted.
