Felix Leong or Cheok Son is a Grandmaster of the Chinese martial art of the Wing Chun style, and a martial arts champion. [1] In 2015 Leong's academy was nearly incinerated after over 30 years of operation. [2]

Early life

Leong was born at Foshan in Guangdong province, China, and influenced at an early age, especially by his grandmother, who was regarded as a high level master in martial arts.[ citation needed ]

Martial arts career

In 1974 Leong established his martial arts academy in Adelaide. His club had a background in all 3 lineages of Wing Chun along with Muay Thai, Wu Shu, Tai Chi and Qigong.[ citation needed ] Many of the world's foremost martial artists have taught at Leong's academy, including Ip Chun, Yuttana and Li Jun Feng.[ citation needed ] Leong is one of the few disciples of Sum Nung successor of Yuen Kay Shan. Leong was taken as a disciple because Leong held a national and pacific championship titles in martial arts. Nung's hobby was fighting birds he would not feed the ones that couldn't fight hence why he took on Leong as a disciple because he could already fight, that was his philosophy.[ citation needed ] In 2019 the entire SANFL Norwood Redlegs football team came to Leong's academy to practice Kung Fu.`

Lion Dance

Leong regularly runs a symbolic Southern lion dance troop through his club every Chinese New Year in order to exorcise bad spirits and bring good luck to local businesses. [1]

Fire

A fire started in the basement of Leong's Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy at 12:13 PM on 2 September 2015 where he had been operating his academy for over 3 decades. Fire spread throughout the building, Leong had no insurance and lost $100,000 worth of equipment including 5 wooden dummies. [3] [4] Five months later, two special handmade wooden dummies, crucial to the teaching of Wing Chun, were donated to Leong's Academy by the owner of the Melbourne Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy. A child-sized dummy was one of five made in the world exactly like the larger size. [2] Many of Leong's students donated and visited from overseas to help the academy recover.[ citation needed ]

Rebirth ceremony

Felix Leong's Rebirth From the Ashes ceremony in Adelaide hosted State Members of Parliament Jing Lee and David Pisoni as honoured guests. Lion dancing and a roast pork traditional feast were provided.[ citation needed ]

Yuen Kay-shan nicknamed Yuen Lo-jia was a Grandmaster of Wing Chun. The youngest of five brothers, he became known as "Foshan Yuen Lo-jia" . He was the fifth child of wealthy firework monopoly owner Yuen Chong Ming, and was known as an undefeated champion of 1000 death duels during the 1920-1950s representing the Wing Chun.

Ip Chun, also known as Yip Chun or Yip Jun, is a Chinese martial artist in the style of Wing Chun. He is the elder of two sons. Chun’s father Ip Man was the Wing Chun teacher of Bruce Lee.

Jim Fung

Fung Chuen Keung, known as Jim Fung, was a practitioner and teacher of Wing Chun kung fu and founder of the 'International Wing Chun Academy'. He had been training under his master, Tsui Seung Tin (徐尚田), since 1960.

William Cheung Chinese-born Australian Grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu

William Cheung or Cheung Cheuk-hing, born October, 1940, is a Hong Kong Wing Chun kung fu practitioner and currently the Grandmaster of his lineage of Wing Chun, entitled Traditional Wing Chun (TWC). He also heads the sanctioning body of TWC, the Global Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu Association (GTWCKFA). Cheung is responsible for introducing Bruce Lee to his master Ip Man when they were teenagers in Hong Kong.

Sum Nung Chinese doctor and Grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu

Sum Nung or Cen Neng (岑能) was a Peruvian-Chinese martial artist. He was a Grandmaster of the Wing Chun style and the only disciple of martial artist Yuen Kay Shan. At the age of 18, he became famous in Foshan,and is now considered the father of Wing Chun of Guangzhou.

The different branches of the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun can be thought of as describing both the differing traditions and interpretations of Wing Chun, and the teacher-student relationships which perpetuate them.

The Prodigal Son is a 1981 Hong Kong martial arts comedy film starring Yuen Biao and directed by Sammo Hung, who also co-starred and wrote with Barry Wong. Fut Gar

Anthony Arnett American Grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu

Anthony Arnett is an American martial artist specializing in Chinese martial arts, particularly Wing Chun. He is a direct disciple of American Wing Chun pioneer William Cheung and is founder of his own system, Arnett Sport Kung Fu.

Terry Lim Malaysian-born Australian martial artist

Terry Lim is an Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee, and renowned martial artist who has had a short documentary made about him titled It's him... Terry Lim by Angus Sampson. He is Founder of the Loong Fu Pai Martial Arts Academy in 1981, with over 350 active students. Loong Fu Pai is one of the most successful martial arts schools in Melbourne founded by one person, grading over 60 black belts. He began running inter-club martial arts tournaments in 1985, and since then these tournaments have run 3 times each year. His Branches total 19 making it one of the largest independent Academies in the one city.
